About The Position

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Director of Nursing (DON) to lead our clinical nursing operations. The DON will oversee the delivery of exceptional hospice care, ensure regulatory compliance, manage and develop our nursing team, and collaborate with interdisciplinary staff to uphold the highest standards of palliative care. This leadership role requires a blend of clinical expertise, strategic vision, and a deep commitment to hospice philosophy.

Requirements

  • Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Mississippi.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience, with at least 3 years in hospice or palliative care.
  • At least 2–3 years of progressive leadership or supervisory experience in a clinical setting.
  • Strong knowledge of hospice regulations (Medicare Conditions of Participation, state licensure requirements).
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) systems and Microsoft Office.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in Hospice and Palliative Nursing (CHPN) or willingness to obtain.
  • Experience with QAPI programs, budget management, and staff development.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams through change and maintain high standards of care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide overall direction, supervision, and coordination of all clinical nursing services, including home care, inpatient care, and bereavement support.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate nursing policies, procedures, and standards of care to ensure compliance with federal, state, and CMS regulations, as well as accreditation standards (e.g., CHAP, Joint Commission).
  • Lead quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI) initiatives, focusing on pain and symptom management, patient safety, and outcomes.
  • Recruit, hire, train, mentor, and evaluate nursing staff (RNs, LPNs, CNAs); foster a supportive, cohesive team environment.
  • Oversee interdisciplinary team meetings, care planning, and coordination with physicians, social workers, therapists, and other providers.
  • Manage nursing budgets, staffing schedules, and resource allocation to optimize efficiency and quality.
  • Monitor patient care documentation, ensure accurate and timely charting, and maintain compliance with all documentation requirements.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor to staff, promoting best practices in palliative and end-of-life care.
  • Participate in strategic planning, program development, and community outreach to enhance hospice services.
  • Act as a liaison with regulatory bodies, auditors, and external partners.
  • Promote a culture of compassion, respect, and excellence in hospice care.
