About The Position

Saint Mary Star of the Sea Parish in Beverly, MA is seeking an accomplished organist and choir director to work as the Director of Music. This part-time position requires collaboration with parish clergy, staff, and volunteers to fulfill the worship needs of the parish while adhering to Catholic liturgical standards. The Music Director will foster a welcoming environment for sharing gifts and talents, encouraging full and active participation from the congregation. The role includes responsibilities for two Sunday Masses at 7:30 am and 10:15 am, with the volunteer Adult Choir meeting at 9:00 am on Sundays to prepare for the 10:15 Mass, except during summer months. The Music Director will conduct the choir, provide organ accompaniment, and plan music for parish liturgies. The exceptional Hook & Hastings pipe organ at St. Mary's is central to all liturgical events, and the Music Director will be responsible for its upkeep and maintenance. In addition to Sunday Mass, the Director of Music will also play for funerals, weddings, and other holy days and events as specified. Additional responsibilities include conducting funerals (approximately 35 per year), weddings (approximately 15 per year), and various holy days such as Ash Wednesday and the Immaculate Conception. The Music Director will also oversee the planning, preparation, and distribution of all music in the parish, meet with families for weddings and funerals, schedule and prepare cantors, recruit new choir members, and create and administer the annual music budget. Attendance at occasional staff meetings is also required. The liturgical music program at Saint Mary's Parish is well-established, supported by the clergy and congregation, and offers a rewarding environment for a church musician who appreciates the role of sacred music in worship. The parish has a tradition of excellence in liturgical music, with an accomplished volunteer choir, professional cantors, and guest instrumentalists. Music for the liturgy is prepared weekly and published in a worship aid for the congregation. The Pastor is particularly interested in expanding the organ recital program to enhance the cultural fabric of the local community.
