About The Position

HCMH Mental Health & Wellness Center is seeking a dynamic and mission‑driven Director of Mental Health & Wellness to lead the daily operations and continue advancing our commitment to high‑quality, patient‑centered behavioral health care. This leadership role oversees clinical and administrative functions, supports a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals, and drives operational excellence across the department. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership experience, a passion for mental health services, and the ability to foster a collaborative, innovative, and compliant care environment aligned with our organizational goals. The Director of the Mental Health and Wellness Center oversees daily clinical and administrative operations and supports mental health providers, including medical staff and therapists. This role ensures efficient, compliant, high‑quality, and patient‑centered care while providing leadership aligned with hospital policies, strategic objectives, and program goals.

Requirements

  • Mental health or healthcare experience required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a mental health discipline or healthcare-related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Clinical support in crisis intervention and experience working with individuals experiencing acute mental health distress.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary mental health and healthcare team.
  • Strong supervisory skills, including evaluation, coaching, and discipline of professional and paraprofessional staff.
  • Knowledge of community support systems, healthcare and human services, and collaboration with courts, law enforcement, and other agencies.
  • Strong organizational, administrative, and leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of and ability to adhere to professional codes of ethics.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with the State of Iowa mental health code.
  • Engages in continuing education and community outreach in the evolving field of mental health.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational, collaborative, and systems‑management skills.
  • Provides clear communication regarding clinic direction, expectations, and goals.
  • Identifies and implements operational improvements to enhance clinic workflows, efficiency and patient experience.
  • Maintains effective, closed‑loop communication with staff.
  • Demonstrates interest in learning therapeutic and psychiatric modalities.
  • Maintains a mindset of continuous evaluation, innovation, and quality improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Direct daily operations of the Mental Health and Wellness Center, ensuring compliance with clinical, programmatic, and administrative policies and procedures.
  • Provide leadership and supervision to department staff, including coaching, performance evaluation, and support for professional development.
  • Recommend programmatic, operational, and administrative improvements to executive leadership in alignment with hospital and departmental objectives.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain clinical and administrative policies and procedures supporting program goals and regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee quality assurance activities related to clinical care, documentation, and outcomes.
  • Ensure continuity of care through appropriate and effective staffing models, productivity standards, and service coordination.
  • Support staff in delivering of evidence-based and ethical mental health services, including crisis intervention when appropriate.
  • Manage departmental operations to ensure efficiency, compliance, and responsible use of resources.
  • Monitor productivity and service delivery to meet established performance standards.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, state and federal regulations, and applicable mental health codes.
  • Participate in hospital committees and interdisciplinary work groups as assigned.
  • Supervise, evaluate, coach, and support clinical and administrative staff.
  • Address performance concerns, including corrective action and termination, in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Foster a collaborative, team-based environment within a comprehensive community mental health system.
