About The Position

Under the direction of the Head of Academics, the Director of Math works collaboratively to set a vision for Math instruction while providing direct and indirect support to LPS Math instructional coaches and teachers.  The Director of Math is an integral member of the LPS Academic Team that works with principals, academic deans, and teachers to craft and drive the vision behind an exemplary Math program. We work closely with these cohorts to ensure that they develop the tools, skills, and knowledge necessary to navigate a changing landscape needed to support rigorous Math instruction through professional and curricular development, core skill building, classroom observations and data analysis. The Director of Math alongside the Head of Academics and Heads of School are responsible for owning the vision, implementation, execution and results of our Math instruction across all subject areas.

Requirements

  • Deep content and pedagogical expertise in Math
  • Significant experience coaching teachers and instructional leaders, previous experience as a principal or assistant principal is preferred.
  • Professional maturity and leadership, capable of engaging adults regarding performance and mindset gaps
  • Comfort working and executing through a network construct and working with relational authority as opposed to positional authority.
  • Exceptional collaboration, communication, analytical and influencing skills
  • Exemplary writing skills
  • Willingness to do “whatever it takes” and strong team player
  • The ability to work autonomously as well as take direction as needed
  • Strong data analysis skills
  • An acute attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
  • The ability to see through multiple projects with many moving parts from beginning to end
  • Humility, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and “roll-up-my-sleeves” attitude
  • Experience teaching and leading within the K-12 public education sector, working in low income urban schools preferred
  • Personnel management experience, including team building experience
  • Bachelors or graduate degree required. Masters preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Principals, Instructional Leaders, and individual teachers to align effective Math practices
  • Support the development of high-quality Math instruction in all LPS Schools – through coaches and direct support
  • Support and monitor the growth and effectiveness of instructional coaches supporting Math instruction
  • Support and facilitate Math professional development at PD days throughout the year, and at individual schools and/or school networks as needed
  • Act as a thought partner to the network leadership teams to help synthesize the network vision for Math instruction, contribute to the development of clear programmatic recommendations for school leaders, and disseminate pertinent and cutting edge Math research to key players
  • Work with implementation and student outcome data to help teachers and principals improve instruction
  • Analyze Math data and classroom practice to develop, implement, and monitor an LPS-wide Math Plan for increasing student achievement
  • Continuously track and analyze Math achievement data to identify monitor the success of the Math Achievement plan and make changes as appropriate
  • Create routines and practices that build or sustain connections between people who have expertise to share but have minimal interaction
  • Facilitate opportunities for teachers to see best practices demonstrated on site (e.g. lab classroom, demonstration lessons) and to share practices with one another (e.g. grade-level meetings, inquiry groups, peer observations)
  • Work collaboratively with Principals, Instructional Coaches, and A-team members and school-site specific professional developments that are aligned to high priority initiatives and teacher need
  • Manage existing partnerships and grants that support Math instruction across LEAD
  • Broker partnerships with external partners as needed.  Participate in key grant initiatives as needed
  • Design, Launch and Implement new initiatives working through Heads of School and School Leadership teams to ensure fidelity and success
  • Translate new vision of teaching & learning into tangible materials for teachers to use
  • Review and guide selection of effective Math instructional resources that meet the demands of effective teaching & learning
  • Support the implementation, revision, execution and data analysis of Network wide Math interim assessments
  • Work with the Instructional Technology team to vet and make available digital tools to support instruction and intervention
  • Develop video and other artifacts for use in professional development showcasing highly effective Math instruction
