Director of Manufacturing

MaverickXAustin, TX
Onsite

About The Position

MaverickX is engineering the future of chemistry for natural resource extraction. We are intensely focused on bringing economic value to our customers, shareholders, and employees – while solving pressing resource challenges facing the United States and the world. The Director of Manufacturing is responsible for fully owning and scaling Maverick’s production capability. You will be a key member of the operations leadership team and will work directly with the Chief Executive Officer, while partnering closely with Technical, Sales & Business Development, and Finance. You will sit at the intersection of process, production, and commercialization, ensuring that manufacturing output is consistent, scalable, and aligned with real-world deployment needs. This role requires constant interaction across the organization to translate technical capabilities into reliable production and to ensure that manufacturing never becomes a constraint on growth. In this hands-on role, you will take full ownership of manufacturing performance at Maverick’s Pleasanton production facility, ensuring that output, yield, and operational reliability are delivered consistently, at scale, and in alignment with commercial demand. You will be responsible for transforming an early-stage production system into a predictable, high-throughput manufacturing operation. This includes driving process scale-up, eliminating variability, and establishing the systems required for continuous, repeatable production. You will oversee reactor performance, downstream processing, and plant operations, ensuring that every batch meets defined quality and yield targets. You will define and control cost per liter, identify and remove bottlenecks, and implement the process controls necessary to support sustained scale. This is a highly visible role at the center of Maverick’s operations. You will work directly across Technical, Sales & Business Development, and Operations to ensure that manufacturing reliably supports field deployments and commercial growth. This role is critical to building a scalable industrial platform. The environment is fast-paced, execution-driven, and requires operating in real-world conditions rather than ideal ones.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in manufacturing, process engineering, or industrial production environments
  • Proven experience scaling a process from pilot or early-stage production to stable, high-throughput manufacturing
  • Deep understanding of large-scale liquid-phase systems, including fermentation and/or complex chemical production
  • Demonstrated ownership of production metrics such as yield, throughput, cost, and reliability
  • Experience designing or significantly improving manufacturing systems, including process flow, equipment configuration, and operational protocols
  • Strong ability to diagnose and resolve scale-dependent process issues in real-world operating environments
  • Experience leading teams in industrial settings and translating technical requirements into operational execution
  • Ability to operate with urgency, make decisions under uncertainty, and drive results in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with technical, commercial, and operational teams

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in industrial fermentation at scale, particularly beyond pilot-stage systems
  • Background in specialty chemicals, oilfield chemicals, or other large-scale liquid production environments
  • Experience building or scaling manufacturing facilities in early-stage or growth-stage companies
  • Familiarity with process control systems, instrumentation, and data-driven manufacturing environments
  • Experience operating in non-GMP or industrial environments where robustness is prioritized over perfect control
  • Track record of improving production economics and implementing scalable systems

Responsibilities

  • Production Ownership: Own end-to-end manufacturing performance at the Pleasanton facility, including throughput, yield, cycle time, and batch consistency. Ensure production targets are met reliably and without dependence on individual operators.
  • Process Scale-Up: Lead the scale-up of existing processes across large-volume reactors, identifying and eliminating failure modes that emerge at scale, including limitations in mixing, oxygen transfer, nutrient delivery, and phase behavior.
  • Yield & Consistency Control: Drive improvements in active output per batch and reduce batch-to-batch variability. Establish clear performance baselines and enforce accountability for meeting them.
  • Operational Reliability: Minimize downtime, eliminate recurring failure modes, and ensure the facility operates as a stable, continuously running system capable of supporting commercial demand.
  • Cost Discipline: Define and control cost per liter and cost per unit of active. Identify and reduce inefficiencies in raw materials, energy usage, and labor intensity.
  • Contamination Management: Design and enforce contamination-resistant workflows appropriate for an industrial, non-sterile production environment. Ensure production robustness under real operating conditions.
  • Scalable Systems: Build and implement standardized manufacturing processes that reduce operator dependence and enable repeatable execution.
  • Instrumentation & Monitoring: Establish process monitoring systems, including real-time tracking of key variables and performance metrics across all stages of production.
  • Process Optimization: Continuously identify and remove bottlenecks, improving throughput, yield, and efficiency across the production system.
  • Automation & Efficiency: Reduce reliance on manual processes by implementing automation, improving data capture, and streamlining workflows.
  • Replication Readiness: Develop modular, repeatable plant designs and operating procedures that enable future facilities to be deployed without reengineering the system.
  • Long-Term Scale Strategy: Contribute to the design and build-out of future manufacturing sites, ensuring lessons learned at Pleasanton are captured and institutionalized.

Benefits

  • Premium health insurance: With medical, dental, and optical options, we offer some of the best coverage on the market
  • Continuing education: We take employee development seriously and strive to unlock our team’s full potential through continuous learning initiatives
