About The Position

The Director of Institutional Giving is charged with driving strategy and implementation for securing revenue from corporations, foundations and government entities, with an emphasis on cultivating transformational relationships leading to 6- and 7-figure commitments. The Director of Institutional Giving will be an experienced fundraising professional who embraces the mission of the Food Bank and understands the opportunities, complexities, and strategies to attract and retain institutional donors. They will take the initiative, in collaboration with leaders across the organization and with their team, to design plans, proposals, and relationships that support the priorities of the Food Bank. Who We Are: The San Francisco-Marin Food Bank’s mission is to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin counties. We envision a community free of the root causes of hunger, where everyone has access to nutritious food of their choosing and is uplifted by a network of support. Together with more than 300 community partners, we work to address hunger head-on through a coordinated network of neighborhood food pantries, CalFresh enrollment, home-delivered groceries, and policy and advocacy efforts. We work with our community to provide food for people facing hunger today while working to end the hunger of tomorrow. This fiscal year, we are serving 36,000 households per week. What You Would Be Accountable for: The Director of Institutional Giving will be responsible for the following key pieces of work: The Director will create the strategy and lead a talented team of fundraisers to deliver at least $8 million in annual operating grants from foundations and corporations, as well as support for renewals and opportunities from government entities to support the organization’s goals and priorities. They will model an integrated, collaborative approach to secure multi-year commitments for capital, operating, and special purpose initiatives at the Food Bank. The Director will embrace the Food Bank’s mission to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin and will leverage their leadership and professional expertise to advance this mission.

Requirements

  • 7+ years' experience securing institutional or principal gifts from foundations and corporations, preferably for a $10+ million nonprofit organization.
  • Experience managing and mentoring a team of fundraisers.
  • You have a track record of success creating and leading long-range strategies for a growing fundraising program, preferably within a human services nonprofit.
  • You have hands-on experience researching, designing, writing, and submitting complex proposals for institutional funders.
  • You are a nonprofit professional with experience closing and stewarding multi-year foundation and corporate funding agreements.
  • You have contributed to maintaining the accuracy of donor records and tracking moves management strategies and engagement with institutional donors.
  • You have knowledge of local and national foundations and corporations, and human services funders.
  • You have experience developing and contributing to multi-year strategic initiatives, capital, and programmatic campaigns.

Responsibilities

  • Institutional Fund Development: Lead the institutional giving team to raise significant philanthropic revenue from corporations, foundations and government entities through gifts, grants, sponsorships and new forms of private philanthropy and public support.
  • Develop and manage a high-value, high-yield portfolio of corporate and foundation prospects, donors and partners; cultivate and engage effectively with relevant local and national corporate and foundation executives, program officers, board members and staff.
  • Provide strategic thinking, hands-on design, project management and writing for proposal development, letters of inquiry, and reports to existing and prospective institutional funders for continued engagement.
  • Design and direct implementation of annual and multi-year revenue plans to deliver on ambitious goals.
  • Develop and direct implementation of an institutional giving growth strategy, in close collaboration with colleagues in development and programming.
  • Ensure strategy for each donor aligns with organizational priorities, strategies, and goals.
  • Collaborate with leaders of other development departments to set annual and long-term fundraising strategies and plans for the Institutional Giving department.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the Food Bank within corporate and foundation communities.
  • Perform other duties and participate in special projects as needed.
  • Administration and Staff Management: Set a strong vision for the team, including clear priorities, objectives, and measurable goals.
  • Inspire, motivate, and empower team members to meet organizational and professional goals.
  • Oversee annual revenue projections, budgeting, work planning, and performance evaluations.
  • Provide professional development support and mentor individuals toward greater professional achievement.

  • Serve as a member of the cross-organizational Director’s leadership team collaborating on meeting organizational goals and priorities.
