About The Position

The director Gardening/ Horticultural & Ground Services is responsible for the creation and upkeep of all public gardens and public landscaped spaces in Lakeside. The director is responsible for planning and coordinating the labor crew’s daily duties and long- term project, establishing and adhering to an annual budget, ordering gardening supplies and plants. Educational gardening programs and tours will be organized and implemented.

Requirements

  • To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and hold a valid Ohio Driver's License.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees of the operation or residents and guests of the property.
  • Ability to apply the basic math concepts.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Must be able to lift heavy equipment and material up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Must be able to climb ladders.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science degree in horticultural related field preferred, or extended on-the-job experience and training.
  • Hands on intern work and/ or extended on-the- job experience a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Contact public speakers and create a slate of educational gardening programs held weekly during the Chautauqua season.
  • Prepare reports and records for review by management team.
  • Evaluate current procedures and practices for accomplishing Lakeside activities and functions relative to gardening.
  • Identify and resolve problems.
  • Develop and implement alternative methods for gardening/ landscaping improvement.
  • Organize garden themed programs to draw outside groups and organizations to visit and tour Lakeside
  • Order supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Provide work directives for subordinates.
  • Prepare work schedules; assign or delegate responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate ability to work collaboratively with volunteer groups, Lakeside administration.
  • Serve as welcoming garden ambassador to Lakeside Community members and visitors.
  • Perform activities such as hiring, training, assigning work, evaluating performance, disciplining or job termination.
