About The Position

As the Director of Health Information Management (HIM), you will support the hospital by directing the Health Information Management Services Department in the management and maintenance of all patient medical records. This role ensures compliance with all state and federal laws, rules, and regulations of licensing agencies, and Joint Commission standards in support of high-quality patient care.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in information management/medical records preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • RHIA or RHIT certification, as determined by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
  • Minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience in information management required; psychiatric healthcare facility experience preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of medical records coding and medical terminology required.
  • Knowledge of state and federal agency regulations, Joint Commission standards, and Medical Staff Bylaws related to medical records management.
  • Knowledge of patient information confidentiality policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency with computers and various software programs.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet corporate deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the HIM department in accordance with standards established by regulatory and licensing agencies.
  • Ensure accurate, compliant, and confidential maintenance of all patient medical records, including authorized release of information.
  • Consult with leadership and medical staff to ensure medical records are maintained within applicable standards and facility bylaws.
  • Lead departmental staffing and oversight, including supervision and staffing adjustments based on facility needs.
  • Oversee record-related inquiries and requests, including subpoenas and other legal requests related to medical records.
  • Monitor chart coding and discharged chart completion, and abstract required information for state agency reporting as applicable.
  • Coordinate preparation and revision of medical record forms and support reporting/Performance Improvement efforts through record data and quality monitoring.
