The Director of Government Relations reports to the Associate Vice President for Government Relations. The incumbent will support the Office of Government & Community Relations in developing, managing, and implementing the state and local government relations programs for Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine. This is a forward-facing position across the University and externally with government and elected officials, advocacy organizations, and events where the Director will represent the University. The Director should be comfortable interacting with senior leaders across the University and externally and must exercise exceptional judgment and professionalism. Government Relations Strategy & Management: Develop and implement the State and local government relations strategy for the University. Represent the University's positions to government and elected officials in Albany, New York City, and across Long Island. Support the Offices of Federal Relations and Community Relations as needed. Relationship Management: Cultivate and manage relationships with a variety of external stakeholders, acting as initial point of contact for external stakeholders and the University. Advance the University's mission and goals with government and elected officials, industry and trade associations, and the business community as directed. Association Representation: Represent the University and Stony Brook Medicine on industry and trade associations. State and Local Grant Management: Provide analysis and tracking of all State and local grants across the University, ensuring University stakeholders are apprised of the status. Engage with State and local government agencies and authorities on prospective grant opportunities and coordinate applications with industry and government partners. Presentation, Tracking, & Administrative Responsibilities: Create and support materials needed to brief the University Cabinet and other University leaders on State and local government relations issues. Track the progress of pending legislation and provide reports to University Leadership on the status of the same. Assist with bimonthly ethics and lobbying filings. Represent the Office of Government Relations on interdepartmental committees. Meetings and Campus Events: Represent the University at meetings and events. Accompany University Leadership to events and meetings. Provide briefing materials and talking points for University Leadership for meetings and events. Will represent the Office of Government Relations at campus events, VIP and dignitary visits, and other events. Provide end to end logistically support for visits partnering with departments across the University. Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission.
