About The Position

Kolbe Cathedral Preparatory School (Kolbe) is a Catholic co-educational, four-year urban high school located in Bridgeport, Connecticut, established by the Diocese of Bridgeport, and dedicated to serving a diverse, multicultural student population. Enrollment exceeds 300 students annually. Kolbe is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Connecticut Department of Education. POSITION SUMMARY Kolbe's Director of Finance oversees the financial, operational, and certain assigned administrative functions of the school. This role ensures the effective management of accounting, payroll, purchasing, tuition receivables, financial reporting, budgeting and compliance with diocesan, state, and federal regulations. The Director of Finance works closely with Kolbe's Principal, administration, faculty, Board of Directors and various committees to support the school's mission and/or operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum five years of experience in financial management or business operations, preferably in a school or non-for-profit organization.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, QuickBooks, Excel, Paycor and FACTS software preferred.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to interface and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, administrators, and parents.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the school.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - highly collaborative and an effective team member.
  • Self-starter who is able to work with limited instruction and supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Financial Operations: Manage the school's accounting, tuition receivable, financial planning, budgeting and reporting process following US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to ensure fiscal viability and best practices.
  • Financial Reporting: Preparation of timely and accurate financial and other reports, as requested, and cash flow projections to assist in decision making by management and the Board of Directors.
  • Budgeting and Cash Flow: Oversee the annual budget process and forecast cash flow and to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Financial Planning: Implement financial strategies that align with the school's mission and goal as approved by the Principal and Board of Directors.
  • Collaborate with Leadership: Work closely with leadership to provide financial insight and support decision-making.
  • Prepares required financial reports timely for the Principal, Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Regularly analyze cash flow data and prepare analytical explanations for management and The Finance Committee.
  • Record and/or supervise all accounting activities including all assets, liabilities, net assets, revenue and expenses in accordance with GAAP.
  • Reconcile and/or review of all bank reconciliations monthly.
  • Track restricted and designated funds to ensure compliance with donor intent.
  • Meet with the Development Director regularly to reconcile contributions and scholarship support received or pledged to accurately and timely record within the accounting software in accordance with GAAP.
  • Develops recommendations to the Finance Committee for annual tuition increases, available scholarship budget, and salary increases in consultation with the Principal.
  • Prepares annual budget proposal for Finance Committee review and approval.
  • Ensures that all expenditures are consistent with the approved budget, or that material variances from the budget are approved in advance by the Principal. Material budget variances need to be communicated timely to the Finance Committee and Board.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining appropriate procedures and internal controls for all financial systems and for supervision of accounting personnel, if any.
  • Coordinates annual audit with approved independent auditors.
  • Other duties as assigned.
