About The Position

Catholic Charities of Buffalo is seeking a full ‑ time Director of Finance to provide strategic financial leadership and operational oversight for all agency financial functions. This role ensures accuracy and integrity in financial operations, compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements, robust internal controls, and timely budgeting, forecasting, and reporting. Catholic Charities is non-profit human services agency that strives to empower individuals, children, and families across the eight counties of Western New York. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • Minimum of seven years of progressive accounting or financial management experience, including supervisory experience.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial practices; experience with government funding streams preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with budgeting, financial analysis, and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word).
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and communication abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work collaboratively across departments.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to compliance and regulatory requirements.
  • Applicants must reside in New York State to be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or CPA strongly preferred.
  • Experience with MIP or similar nonprofit accounting systems preferred; ADP Workforce Now a plus.
  • Prior nonprofit experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all daily financial and accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management.
  • Ensure financial practices comply with GAAP, internal policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead development, preparation, monitoring, and analysis of annual budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Direct month ‑ end and year ‑ end closing processes and ensure timely, accurate financial statements.
  • Review and interpret financial results, including P&L activity, expenditures, cash flow, and variances; recommend corrective actions.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and oversee reconciliations, journal entries, and balance ‑ sheet analysis.
  • Oversee capital asset accounting and asset management systems.
  • Coordinate annual financial audits; serve as primary contact for auditors, funders, and regulatory agencies.
  • Oversee preparation and submission of regulatory filings, including CBR, CFBR, and CFR.
  • Collaborate with government agencies such as OMH and support financial components of grants and contracts.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop Finance Department staff, promoting growth and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and process improvements to support fiscal integrity and efficiency.
  • Maintain strong internal and external relationships to support effective communication and decision ‑
  • Support special projects and organizational initiatives as assigned by the CFO.
  • Comply with agency compliance programs, codes of ethics, confidentiality laws, and all federal/state regulations.
