About The Position

Country Life Natural Foods is seeking a detail-oriented and strategic Director of Finance to oversee our financial operations and support our mission of providing high-quality, plant-based nutrition. This is a "player-coach" role designed for a professional who excels at high-level financial planning while remaining hands-on with daily accounting, payroll, and reporting functions. Reporting directly to the CEO, you will serve as a vital advisor, translating financial data into the strategic insights necessary to scale our distribution and retail operations. Strategic Financial Leadership Serve as a core member of our leadership team, contributing to company-wide goal setting and resource allocation. This leadership role requires quarterly travel to our Michigan facility for high-level planning and team collaboration. Develop and maintain multi-year financial models and annual budgets to ensure long-term fiscal health. Conduct monthly "deep dives" into departmental spending and ROI to identify efficiency opportunities across our warehouse and shipping workflows. Financial Operations & Execution Full-Cycle Accounting: Manage all daily accounting functions in QuickBooks Online, including AP/AR, bank reconciliations, and month-end closing procedures. Payroll & Compliance: Oversee semi-monthly payroll processing and ensure all tax filings and labor compliance requirements are met. Cash Flow Management: Monitor daily cash positions and provide 13-week rolling cash flow forecasts to support inventory procurement and local sourcing. Reporting & Analysis Prepare and present comprehensive monthly financial packages (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow) for the leadership team. Develop and track custom KPIs tailored to natural food distribution and e-commerce performance. Coordinate year-end tax preparation and audits with our external CPA firm.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or relevant experience is required.
  • Strong command of QuickBooks Online and the ability to learn new software systems, such as Shopify and AI tools.
  • Advanced Excel skills are also essential.
  • Proven ability to manage sensitive financial and compensation data with absolute discretion and integrity.
  • Ability to translate complex financial concepts into actionable summaries for non-financial department heads.
  • A "small business mindset"—the ability to pivot seamlessly between high-level strategy and detailed transactional tasks.
  • The ability to move beyond reporting numbers to explaining their impact on the company’s future.
  • A commitment to accuracy in the "hands-on" aspects of the role, from bank recs to payroll.
