About The Position

The Director of External Communications is responsible for shaping Western Union’s external narrative, strengthening brand perception, and amplifying the company’s reputation across global audiences. This role leads enterprise‑level external communications efforts, including management of the corporate website, executive social media presence, and proactive media strategy. The Director serves as a strategic advisor across the business, ensuring that external storytelling supports Western Union’s business priorities, growth strategy, and brand aspiration.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in Communications, Public Relations, External Affairs, or related field.
  • Proven track record leading enterprise‑level external communications strategies within a global or highly regulated environment.
  • Expertise in media relations, digital communications, and executive social platforms.
  • Strong writing, storytelling, and message development capabilities.
  • Ability to influence senior leaders and collaborate across complex organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive enterprise external communications strategy aligned to corporate priorities and brand direction.
  • Shape and manage the narrative for Western Union’s transformation, products, and global business initiatives.
  • Oversee content strategy, editorial direction, and ongoing governance for Western Union’s external website.
  • Partner with digital, brand, and product teams to ensure content accuracy, relevance, and alignment with enterprise goals.
  • Manage and grow strategic social media platforms for key executives, including content development, thought leadership, audience engagement, and analytics tracking.
  • Ensure executive digital communications reinforce Western Union’s brand, culture, and strategic positioning.
  • Develop proactive and reactive media strategies, including pitches, press materials, and messaging frameworks.
  • Monitor global media narratives and industry trends to identify opportunities to advance Western Union’s reputation.
  • Lead crisis media management, including rapid response to emerging issues, development of crisis messaging, and coordination with stakeholders to protect Western Union’s reputation.
  • Serve as a point of contact for media inquiries and coordinate with global media partners and agencies.
  • Track and analyze media mentions, sentiment, and external perception of Western Union.
  • Translate insights into actionable recommendations that strengthen reputation, mitigate risk, and enhance brand visibility.
