About The Position

As the Director of Engineering – Marketplace you will play a critical leadership role at Shipt. Reporting directly to the VP of Engineering, this leader owns multi-team execution, long-term architectural strategy, organizational design, engineering excellence, and the delivery of high-impact customer-facing Marketplace experiences. This is a Leader of Leaders role, responsible for guiding Senior Engineering Managers, Engineering Managers, and Principal Engineers, while collaborating with Staff Engineers and cross-functional directors across Product, UX, Data Science, Analytics, and Infrastructure. The Director of Engineering shapes the technical and operational direction of Marketplace modules such as: Cart/Checkout, Purchase, Post-Purchase, Delivery Experience, Embedded Partnerships, and Security & Compliance governance. This leader sets the bar for engineering quality, culture, mentorship, strategic clarity, architectural alignment, on-call resilience, and AI-assisted engineering transformation across Marketplace. They also work closely with executive leadership to align engineering investment, headcount strategy, and business outcomes. This role requires exceptional leadership maturity, technical judgment, organizational influence, and the ability to drive sustained excellence across multiple engineering teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of professional engineering experience, preferably building distributed, high-scale, customer-facing systems.
  • 3+ years leading engineering teams or 1+ years leading leaders (Senior EMs, EMs, Principal Engineers).
  • Proven track record designing and delivering distributed, highly available, and performant systems.
  • 4+ years experience with Marketplace Systems
  • Understanding of data privacy, security governance, and compliance frameworks.
  • Deep understanding of engineering methodologies, architecture principles, service boundaries, and system design.
  • Proficiency across Fullstack domains (Frontend, Backend, Mobile, Search, ML integration).
  • Ability to challenge technical assumptions and raise the engineering bar across multiple teams.
