About The Position

The Director of Engineering – U.S. Operations serves as the senior technical authority for REP’s U.S.-based engineering organization. This leader is responsible for building, mentoring, and scaling a high-performance engineering team capable of delivering robust, manufacturable, serviceable, and safety-conscious products across both traditional strength equipment and complex electromechanical systems. This role leads domestic engineering execution while partnering closely with our China-based engineering organization, which is managed separately. The Director will ensure strong cross-regional collaboration, engineering standards alignment, and product quality consistency across global operations. This is an onsite leadership role based at REP’s Colorado headquarters.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering field.
  • 10+ years’ experience Managing or Directing a broad scope Engineering group within Product Development. Experience within the fitness space preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading both mechanical and electromechanical product development teams.
  • Direct experience working with Asia-based manufacturing and supply chains for mechanical and electrical commodities.
  • Experience managing hybrid teams (in-house and remote/international contributors).
  • Proven experience in design for manufacturability and cross-functional factory collaboration.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical decision-making across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Responsibilities

  • Engineering Process Excellence:
  • Champion and mentor teams on robust FMEA authoring and lifecycle management, Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Serviceability (DFS), Human factors and ergonomics evaluation
  • Drive engineering documentation, validation protocols, and root cause analysis rigor.
  • Strengthen risk identification and mitigation processes throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Mentor team on product cost estimates and cBOM structures to design within stated cost targets.
  • Technical Authority & Engineering Governance:
  • Serve as the senior technical authority across mechanical and electromechanical product development.
  • Mentor and potentially author or revise format used for design reviews across mechanical, electrical, embedded systems, and firmware-integrated products.
  • Enforce and sometimes establish or revise enforce internal and external engineering standards, documentation rigor, and design validation processes.
  • Ensure product designs meet safety, regulatory, performance, durability, and reliability standards.
  • Global Engineering & Supply Chain Integration:
  • Partner closely with Asia-based Engineering and supply chain partners for both mechanical and electrical design elements.
  • Ensure manufacturability, cost control, quality, and scalability in partnership with global partners.
  • Ensure global compliance to company engineering design, change control, quality assurance, and sourcing protocols.
  • Implement systems and processes to streamline engineering document control in a global department footprint.
  • Navigate cross-cultural and time-zone collaboration effectively.
  • Product Liability & Risk Mitigation:
  • Lead engineering team through robust risk assessment exercises to objectively determine risk probability and devise design solutions to yield low product liability risk profiles.
  • Embed product safety and misuse evaluation into design processes.
  • Partner with Quality, Legal, and Compliance to reduce product liability exposure.
  • Ensure traceability and documentation support defensible product design decisions.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Organizational Leadership & Talent Development:
  • Lead and mentor a hybrid team of in-house and remote engineering staff.
  • Develop engineering managers and high-potential contributors.
  • Partner with the Chief Product Officer on long-term product platform strategy and organizational scaling initiatives.
  • Provide guidance on operational and capital engineering budget drivers.
  • Maintain a positive culture of accountability, ownership, and technical excellence.
  • Identify future leaders and create succession pathways within engineering.
