Director of Engineering, v0

VercelNew York, NY
4h$286,000 - $384,000

About The Position

Vercel gives developers the tools and cloud infrastructure to build, scale, and secure a faster, more personalized web. As the team behind v0, Next.js, and AI SDK, Vercel helps customers like Ramp, Supreme, PayPal, and Under Armour build for the AI-native web. Our mission is to enable the world to ship the best products. That starts with creating a place where everyone can do their best work. Whether you're building on our platform, supporting our customers, or shaping our story: You can just ship things. We're looking for a Director of Engineering to lead the v0 engineering team. v0 is Vercel's AI-powered generative UI product, and you'll be responsible for the technical execution, team health, and engineering outcomes that make it successful. This role reports to Vercel's VP of Engineering and partners closely with the Director of Product Management for v0. You'll own how the team builds, not just what it builds—including quality, velocity, architecture decisions, and hiring.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, with 5+ years managing engineers or engineering managers
  • Track record of building and scaling engineering teams (15+ engineers)
  • Experience shipping AI/ML products, developer tools, or consumer-facing applications
  • Strong technical foundation—you can review system designs, understand model integration challenges, and evaluate infrastructure tradeoffs
  • Clear communicator who sets expectations, gives direct feedback, and builds trust across teams
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity and making decisions with incomplete information

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with LLMs, generative AI, or ML infrastructure
  • Background in frontend frameworks, design systems, or developer experience
  • Previous experience at a high-growth startup or infrastructure company
  • Familiarity with Next.js, React, or the broader frontend ecosystem

Responsibilities

  • Lead the v0 engineering team: Manage the engineering team; set technical direction and standards for the team
  • Own engineering outcomes: Accountable for code quality, system reliability, delivery timelines, and technical debt management
  • Build the team: Recruit, hire, and retain engineers; develop talent and create clear growth paths
  • Drive execution: Establish development processes, remove blockers, and ensure the team ships consistently
  • Partner cross-functionally: Work closely with Product, Design, and other engineering teams to align on priorities and dependencies
  • Make technical tradeoffs: Engage in architecture discussions, evaluate build-vs-buy decisions, and balance short-term delivery with long-term maintainability

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation including salary, equity, and benefits
  • Lead engineering for a product at the intersection of AI and frontend development
  • Join a team that values shipping, technical excellence, and low-ego collaboration
