At Astronomer, our R&D organization is dedicated to providing an exceptional experience in operating data orchestration based on Apache Airflow at many of the world's largest companies. As we continue to grow, we are looking to solve highly complicated technology problems through inventive algorithms and world-class practices around scale. We are building out a world-class Observability team to deliver data observability capabilities that provide our customers visibility, reliability, and actionable insights into their data pipelines and products across some of the world's largest enterprises. We are seeking an experienced Director of Engineering to lead this effort. In this role, you will own the technical vision and execution of Astronomer's observability platform, scale a high-performing engineering team, and partner closely with product and cross-functional stakeholders. Your leadership will directly influence our growth and our ability to deliver exceptional value to customers.

  • Define and drive the technical strategy, roadmap, and execution for Astronomer's observability platform.
  • Lead, grow, and mentor a team of engineers with a focus on collaboration, innovation, and customer impact.
  • Partner with product, design, and other engineering leaders to shape the future of observability and governance within Astronomer's platform.
  • Ensure the architecture, design, and implementation of the observability platform are scalable, reliable, and performant.
  • Foster a culture of engineering excellence, including strong practices around code quality, testing, CI/CD, and operational rigor.
  • Represent the Observability team internally and externally, helping align stakeholders around shared goals.
  • Proven experience leading engineering teams and managers in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • A track record of delivering complex distributed systems and scaling production infrastructure.
  • Strong technical background, ideally with experience in Golang, Python, Kubernetes, SQL/OLAP databases, and stream processing.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization.
  • A strong focus on customer value, bringing clarity and alignment between technical priorities and business outcomes.
  • Passion for building healthy, inclusive teams and fostering growth in engineers.
  • Experience building or scaling data observability products.
  • Familiarity with Apache Airflow or similar workflow orchestrators.
  • Background in observability, monitoring, or infrastructure at scale (e.g., Datadog, Honeycomb, or similar).
  • Estimated total compensation ranges from $260,000 - $300,000, along with an equity component.
  • Remote-first company.
