About The Position

The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) is seeking a fellow for a 24 month term to join the Department of Labor within a state government. The Gubernatorial Office has an ambitious vision to lead the nation in building a modern, inclusive economy powered by a skilled workforce. As sectors such as information technology, life sciences, and aerospace drive the state’s economic future, the workforce strategy must be fast-moving, closely aligned with industry needs, and leverage AI. This workforce development agenda focuses on high-need, high-growth jobs that promote economic mobility and strengthen the state’s competitiveness, with AI playing a crucial role in this transformation. The state is collaborating with FAS to recruit a Director of Emerging Tech Workforce and Inclusive Growth who will lead high-impact workforce initiatives and design strategies that prepare residents for the jobs of tomorrow. The position will play a crucial role in modernizing workforce systems and positioning the state as a national model for inclusive economic growth.

Requirements

  • 7-10 years of relevant experience in technology, workforce development, and economic mobility.
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and cloud computing.
  • Strong analytical ability to interpret workforce data and assess labor market trends.
  • Strong communication skills to translate complex technical information for various audiences.
  • Experience working across government, industry, and education systems.
  • Strong project management skills to drive initiatives from strategy to execution.
  • Stakeholder engagement and governance experience.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Office of the Secretary in advancing AI and Cyber workforce strategy.
  • Help shape statewide efforts to build a future-ready, inclusive workforce.
  • Support the implementation of the Governor’s AI Executive Order and related efforts.
  • Develop AI and Cyber-focused workforce roadmaps for priority sectors.
  • Analyze barriers in the workforce pipeline through an AI and emerging tech lens.
  • Translate AI policy and labor market insights into actionable programs.
  • Design and scale programs that reskill and upskill the workforce for high-need jobs.
  • Reshape funding flows and policy frameworks to adapt scalable, evidence-based models.
  • Develop cross-sector AI education and awareness strategies.
