About The Position

The Sierra Vista Unified School District, an award-winning district with 8 outstanding schools in beautiful southeast Arizona, is seeking a passionate and dedicated Director of District Facilities. This administrative support role is crucial for ensuring an operational and safe environment for all students and staff across the district's facilities and grounds. The Director will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of facility maintenance, repairs, and improvements, working collaboratively with the Superintendent, Building Administrators, and staff. Key responsibilities include identifying and recommending necessary repairs, supervising department and warehouse employees, managing equipment and supply orders, coordinating vehicle and equipment purchases, and overseeing project estimates. The role also involves preparing documentation, representing the district at relevant meetings, and ensuring compliance with preventative maintenance schedules and various state and federal regulations (OSHA, EPA, FEMA, ASSBO). The Director will interact with city departments, contractors, architects, and engineers for capital projects and will develop and manage the School Facilities Board's preventative maintenance program. Regular building inspections for safety and procedure compliance, as well as coordinating inspections by external agencies, are also critical. A core aspect of the position is ensuring effective and responsive customer service and facility support, including 24/7 availability for emergency and routine requirements at all schools and support facilities. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership, management, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, along with technical knowledge of various crafts and facility systems. Confidentiality and adherence to all laws, district procedures, and Board policies are paramount.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or construction management or related discipline.
  • Minimum of two years related experience in public education, private industry, business, or government.
  • Currently hold or ability to obtain Asbestos Building Inspector Accreditation within 6 months of hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona State Driver's License.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.

  • Knowledge of standard methods, equipment, materials, tools, and practices of the crafts.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical units (HVAC), electrical, grounds care, buildings, custodial care, carpentry, playground equipment, and safety.
  • Working knowledge of all applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), regulations that apply to the Facilities and Maintenance Department of the school district and Arizona Association of School Business Officials. (ASSBO)
  • Ability to complete computational tasks, maintain accurate records and reports.

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with District Superintendent, Building Administrators, and staff to ensure an operational and safe environment for all students and staff.
  • Identify and recommend repairs and improvements for the school facilities and grounds in order to maintain healthy and safe environments for students, staff, and the community.
  • Oversee inspection of buildings, structures, and/or items reported to be in need of repair for the purpose of identifying repair/replacement needs necessary to maintain systems.
  • Supervise all department and warehouse employees and oversee the scope of duties.
  • Meet regularly with District Superintendent, School Principal, or designee and discuss concerns and progress on all work orders.
  • Supervise the ordering of equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring the availability of items as needed to properly maintain facilities.
  • Coordinate district purchase of maintenance vehicles and equipment.
  • Oversee project material and labor estimates.
  • Prepares documentation for the purpose of providing written support and/or for conveying information.
  • Represents the district as liaison and attends local and state meetings related to district maintenance and operations.
  • Ensure preventative maintenance as defined by the manufacturer is followed in accordance with daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly schedules as required.
  • Interact with City Engineering Department, contractors, architects, and engineers in connection with short and long-term capital projects.
  • Develop a preventative maintenance program that is in compliance with the School Facilities Board's plan and oversees the completion of all required communication and reporting to Arizona School Facilities Board.
  • Conduct regular building inspections for safety and procedure compliance.
  • Coordinate inspections by state agencies, insurance companies, fire, police, and health department.
  • Ensure customer service and Facility Support service is effectively provided to the end users facility within the assigned area of responsibility, ensuring an effective and responsive in-house and/or contracted capability for emergency and routine requirements at schools and support facilities 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Ensure information obtained through the course of duties associated with this position is held in the highest of confidentiality.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies; including mandatory reporting procedures.
