About The Position

The Director of Development will lead a team of project developers for utility-scale wind, solar energy, and battery storage projects across multiple energy markets within the U.S. This development leader will drive the effective project management, competition analysis, prospecting analysis, project budgeting, and cross-functional internal and external collaboration. This position reports to the Chief Development Officer, will have up to 50% travel based on business needs, and is a full-time development position located in Durham, North Carolina.

  • Demonstrated experience bringing projects to NTP with a successful handoff to the construction team.
  • 6+ years of project development experience in the renewable energy industry.
  • Wind, Solar, and/or battery storage experience is required.
  • At least 2 years of experience managing direct reports.
  • Track record of managing consultants.
  • Ability to concisely present issues to senior executives, investors, and other team members by providing context, analysis, recommendations, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Solid understanding of economic drivers in utility-scale wind, solar, and battery storage.
  • Detailed understanding of the interconnection process by RTO/ISO/market.
  • Highly proficient in MS Office, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing projects in MISO, PJM, SPP, and/or ERCOT is a plus.
  • Experience with project development software (CAD, GIS, Microsoft Project, SiteTracker, etc).

Responsibilities

  • Oversees a team of developers executing the key phases of wind, solar and battery storage project development for a portfolio of pre-NTP projects, including but not limited to site control, project permitting, due diligence studies, and utility interconnection.
  • Prepare frequent reports on project status and participate in internal and external meetings associated with project development.
  • Lead and provide oversight of external consultants as needed for permitting and other project development activities.
  • Responsible for obtaining any required local, state, federal, and regional solar and battery storage project permits, including local agreements that address tax abatement, road use, and decommissioning.
  • Directly supports the interconnection process, including diligence, technical review, and negotiation from application through signed agreement, with the support of the internal interconnection team.
  • Lead internal teams to review project feasibility, project budgets, and development schedules.
  • Drive the identification of project risks, coordinating resolution and mitigation with the cross-functional team.
  • Manage portfolio and project-level expenditures and work with the accounting team to get invoices processed on time.
  • Work with governmental agencies, community groups, and landowners to facilitate development efforts.
  • Lead relationships with stakeholders, including elected officials, regulators, utilities, RTOs, and community leaders, to support project development.
  • Support internal finance and construction teams to facilitate successful project construction and financial closings.
  • Participate in the recruiting and interview process for prospective new employees.
  • Provide training and professional development to project developers and interns on the development team.
  • Lead Development Managers and Associates by providing direction, leadership, and opportunities to enhance their skills as a project developer.
  • Other duties as assigned.
