About The Position

Founded in 1950, St. Anthony's is the most comprehensive safety net service center in San Francisco, directly providing food, clothing, medical care, addiction recovery services, access to technology, job training, and other critical resources to the community. The Director of Development is the lead fundraiser and team manager of the Foundation’s Development team, within our Advancement Department. Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer, this role will design and implement a multi-year data-informed, multi-channel fundraising strategy to expand philanthropic revenue from individual, corporate, and foundation sources. This role oversees individual giving, institutional fundraising, donor engagement, and planned giving, while managing and personally growing a portfolio of major donors, to strengthen and grow charitable revenue. The Foundation currently secures approximately $21 million in charitable revenue annually, with a goal of increasing philanthropic income by at least 4.5% year over year for the next five years. In our 75-year history, the Foundation has not applied for or sought government grants for funding. The Director manages a team of five full-time staff, and partners closely with Communications, Events, Volunteer Services, Finance, and Service Program Leadership to achieve shared advancement goals. Requirements

  • 10+ years of progressive fundraising experience with demonstrated success growing philanthropic revenue, particularly in individual giving.
  • Proven track record of identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and closing five- and six-figure gifts, with confidence leading $100,000+ asks.
  • Experience operating in a complex, multi-channel fundraising environment, with the ability to assess opportunities and adjust strategy in real time.
  • 5+ years of experience managing and developing fundraising teams of three or more staff, with a focus on performance, accountability, and growth.
  • Experience leading comprehensive development programs, including major gifts, annual giving, institutional funding, events, and planned giving.
  • Strong financial and operational acumen, including experience developing budgets, forecasting revenue, and managing to goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and execute donor-centric engagement strategies that deepen relationships and increase giving over time.
  • Strategic thinker who translates data and insights into clear priorities, decisions, and action.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence, inspire, and build trust with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and with leadership, board members, and donors.
  • Highly skilled with Microsoft Office Suite of products including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database management
  • Experience using CRM systems, preferably Salesforce, to manage portfolios, track performance, and analyze data.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and drive results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, manage competing priorities, and lead through ambiguity.
  • Ability to be polite, diplomatic, and firm.
  • Can set limits and practice professional boundaries with guests, direct reports, and coworkers.

Responsibilities

  • Staff Performance and Development Lead, coach, develop, and inspire a diverse team of fundraising professionals through ambitious goals, fostering a culture of relationship-centered philanthropy and excellence.
  • Set clear goals, monitor performance, and provide timely and regular ongoing feedback for staff performance and professional development.
  • Responsible for training staff on standard operating procedures for the department.
  • Ensure staff are professional, demonstrate good customer service skills towards guests and other community members.
  • Role model and set the expectation that staff treat all individuals with dignity and respect.
  • Facilitate regular meetings and team huddles for staff.

  • Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive fundraising strategy across all charitable revenue streams, including major gifts, annual giving, corporate and foundation funding, fundraising events, and planned giving.
  • Sets direction and drives measurable fundraising outcomes across a multi-year strategic vision and growth horizon.
  • Secures gifts across all giving channels and continuously expands the Foundation’s philanthropic opportunities.
  • Establish annual and multi-year revenue goals and hold the team accountable for performance against targets.
  • Identify, prioritize, and pursue new revenue opportunities to support program growth and long-term sustainability.
  • Advise the Chief Advancement Officer and CEO on fundraising strategy, pipeline health, and emerging opportunities.
  • Manage and grow a portfolio of major donors and high-capacity prospects, with a focus on securing six- and seven-figure gifts
  • Design and oversee a donor-centric moves management system that strengthens cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship
  • Guide portfolio strategy for executive leadership and board members to increase engagement and giving
  • Ensure high-quality donor experiences across all touchpoints, including events, communications, and recognition.
  • Oversee foundation and corporate fundraising strategy, including proposal development and relationship management.
  • Provide oversight of planned giving strategy, including stewardship of legacy donors and growth of the pipeline.
  • Review and manage documentation related to planned gifts, including trusts and estate commitments.
  • Partner with Board Development Committee to cultivate board members as fundraising ambassadors.
  • Oversee development operations, including CRM strategy, reporting, and data integrity.
  • Translates fundraising data and trends into disciplined planning, portfolio management, and program execution.
  • Create and ensure consistent implementation of systems, processes, and standard operating procedures.
  • Use data and analytics to evaluate performance, inform strategy, and improve return on investment.
  • Ensure accurate forecasting, pipeline tracking, and revenue reporting.
  • Oversee the development and quality of donor-facing materials to ensure clarity, consistency, and impact.
  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and onboarding tasks in Ulti-Pro, training, and familiarizing new staff with St. Anthony Foundation (SAF) programs.
  • Responsible for communicating the policies and procedures of St. Anthony’s to staff.
  • Responsible for the implementation of policies and procedures for the department.
  • Develop and recommend an annual budget and monitor work unit expenses.
  • Oversees work unit inventory.
  • Responsible for data entry into data management systems.
  • Ensure that all data information is accurate and entered in a timely manner.
  • Ensure program policy and procedure documents are consistently maintained and up to date.
  • Represents St. Anthony’s with integrity and enthusiasm, deepening the connection between donors and the Foundation’s mission.
  • Partner with Communications, Events, Volunteer Services, and Program teams to align messaging, engagement, and donor experience.
  • Represent Development in cross-functional planning and organizational strategy discussions.
  • Participate in regular training and development opportunities to increase personal capacity to apply innovative approaches to daily workflows, organizational goals and strategies, and functions of the position.
  • Serve as a visible ambassador in the community, strengthening partnerships and advancing philanthropic support
