About The Position

The Director of Development serves as the senior leader responsible for all unrestricted philanthropic revenue at Jhpiego. This role sets and drives the strategy for individual, major gift, foundation, corporate, event, and board-related fundraising to ensure sustainable, flexible funding that advances Jhpiego’s global mission. As a senior member of GECO, the Director of Development oversees a comprehensive unrestricted fundraising portfolio, including corporate and brand partnerships, individual philanthropy, signature fundraising events (including the Laughter is the Best Medicine Gala), advisory board engagement, and VIP donor cultivation initiatives. The Director is accountable for revenue growth, pipeline development, donor stewardship, and team leadership. This role supervises fundraising staff and ensures alignment across fundraising, marketing, communications, and executive leadership to deliver measurable revenue results and long-term donor engagement.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Nonprofit Management, Business, Communications, Public Health, or related field with 10+ years of progressive nonprofit fundraising experience
  • Demonstrated success leading unrestricted fundraising portfolios
  • Proven track record securing five-, six-, and seven-figure gifts
  • Experience managing and mentoring fundraising teams
  • Experience working with executive leadership and board members
  • Deep expertise in unrestricted philanthropy, major gifts, corporate partnerships, and event-based fundraising
  • Proven ability to develop and execute multi-year fundraising growth strategies
  • Strong moves management and pipeline development expertise
  • Experience managing gala and high-profile fundraising events as revenue drivers
  • Ability to engage and influence C-suite executives, board members, and high-net-worth individuals
  • Strong financial acumen, including budget development and revenue forecasting
  • Data-driven decision maker with proficiency in fundraising CRMs (Raiser’s Edge preferred)
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to build and motivate high-performing teams
  • High level of discretion and professionalism

Responsibilities

  • Unrestricted Fundraising Strategy & Revenue Leadership
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive strategy to grow unrestricted revenue across individual, corporate, foundation, and event channels.
  • Establish annual revenue goals, multi-year growth targets, and key performance metrics.
  • Oversee pipeline development, prospect strategy, and moves management across teams.
  • Personally manage and solicit a portfolio of high-capacity donors and corporate partners.
  • Provide revenue forecasting and regular reporting to VP, GECO and executive leadership.
  • Identify and implement innovative fundraising strategies, including emerging philanthropic trends, planned giving exploration, new funding models, partnership opportunities, and diversified revenue streams.
  • Individual, Major Gift & Foundation Fundraising Oversight
  • Oversee all individual and major gift fundraising strategy and execution.
  • Guide portfolio strategy for high-net-worth donors and family foundations.
  • Oversee annual giving, mid-level donor growth, and donor acquisition strategies to build a sustainable long-term pipeline.
  • Ensure strong stewardship, donor retention, and upgrade strategies.
  • Support board members in their philanthropic engagement and giving strategies.
  • Collaborate with Marketing & Communications to align campaigns and donor messaging.
  • Corporate Partnerships & Sponsorship Strategy
  • Provide strategic oversight of corporate fundraising, sponsorships, and brand partnerships.
  • Guide strategy for securing five- and six-figure sponsorships and cause-marketing partnerships.
  • Oversee corporate engagement tied to signature events, including sponsorship revenue.
  • Ensure strong ROI, reporting, and long-term corporate relationship growth.
  • Gala & Strategic Events Revenue Leadership
  • Serve as lead for the Laughter is the Best Medicine Gala and other major fundraising events, ensuring revenue maximization (not event logistics execution).
  • Establish financial targets and revenue strategy for events.
  • Collaborate with event leadership to align sponsorship, ticketing, and donor upgrade strategies.
  • Oversee post-event cultivation strategies to convert event participants into long-term donors.
  • Advisory Board & Strategic Donor Engagement
  • Provide strategic leadership for advisory board fundraising engagement.
  • Partner with senior leadership to cultivate and solicit board members and high-profile advocates.
  • Prepare leadership for donor engagement, including briefing materials, strategy development, and follow-up.
  • Oversee VIP donor engagement initiatives, including cultivation events and donor travel experiences.
  • Ensure alignment between board engagement and major gift pipeline growth.
  • Team Leadership & Operational Oversight
  • Directly supervise fundraising staff.
  • Establish clear performance goals, revenue expectations, and professional development plans.
  • Ensure strong CRM management, reporting accuracy, and financial compliance.
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing fundraising culture.
