Duke University School of Medicine is seeking a strategic and relationship-driven fundraising professional to serve as Director of Development. Duke Health Development & Alumni Affairs (DHDAA) supports a flexible work environment by offering on-site (in office 5 days a week), hybrid (in office a minimum of 2 days a week or defined by manager), remote (work off-site 5 days a week), and flexible start and end time work arrangements. All team members must reside within a 50-mile radius of our downtown Durham office. If working a hybrid or remote schedule, individuals must have access to and maintain a secure home office environment with high-speed internet service and work collaboratively with others using a variety of technologies and tools. With approval from their manager, staff members may work a flexible schedule in terms of start/end times, while working within DHDAA’s core work hours between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (eastern standard). At the discretion of Managers and/or Senior Leadership, staff working a hybrid, remote or flex schedule may be required to be in the office on days and/or times outside of the agreed upon schedule. This position is full-time located in Durham, NC. This is not a remote position. The Director of Development, School of Medicine, identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards major gift prospects ($100,000 and above) for Duke University School of Medicine, with a primary focus on School of Medicine alumni. The Director of Development reports to the Assistant Vice President, School of Medicine Development and Alumni Affairs. This person collaborates with Duke University School of Medicine leaders and colleagues, Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs colleagues, and other Duke University departments on donor engagement strategy and initiatives.

Requirements

  • Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.
  • Work requires five (5) years of progressive fundraising experience in a related organization with a proven track record in major gifts.
  • Campaign experience is desirable.
  • OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and qualify prospects who have the ability to significantly support the School of Medicine.
  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of prospects capable of gifts of $100,000 or more, utilizing in-person, virtual, and phone meetings.
  • Carry significant fundraising metric expectations, including dollars raised.
  • Engage senior administrators and faculty on fundraising initiatives.
  • Solicit multi-year pledges to support key needs for the school and the long-term growth of major gift prospect pipeline.
  • Stay continuously informed of Duke Health’s strategic vision and opportunities for philanthropic support, taking advantage of opportunities to learn within Duke Health and across Duke.
  • Communicate philanthropic support and broader school priorities to alumni, volunteers, and donors.
  • Travel to visit alumni prospects and donors as needed.
  • Successfully maintain and manage a portfolio of major gift prospects.
  • Utilize university-wide prospect tracking systems to assure efficient and well-coordinated effort.
  • Follow procedures in coordination with the Office of Gift Records to ensure effective collecting, recording, accounting, acknowledgement, and follow-up on all private gifts to assigned areas.
  • Develop contact reports and enter moves and data into tracking databases.
  • Follow best fundraising and operational practices for Duke Health Development & Alumni Affairs.
  • Collaborate with gift officers from other Duke University schools and units, including Duke’s central development function, on cultivating and soliciting multi-interest prospects.
  • Participate in meetings and events, such as Medical Alumni Council meetings and Medical Alumni weekend, and recognition and stewardship programs as appropriate.
  • Represent the School of Medicine Development and Alumni Affairs team with faculty, leadership, and administration.
  • Actively contribute to a collaborative team environment and represent the team thoughtfully and professionally in interactions across the organization and with external partners.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
