Wheeling University is seeking a Director of Counseling Services to join our team! The Director is responsible for campus collaboration to promote student mental health, wellbeing, and retention. The Director ensures high-quality, ethical, and accessible counseling services while advancing a holistic, student-centered approach aligned with the institution’s mission and values.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Counseling or Social Work, Doctorate in Psychology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Current licensure (or eligibility for licensure within three months of hire) in the state of employment as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), Licensed Psychologist (PhD or PsyD), or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of progressively responsible clinical experience, including experience in a higher education or college counseling setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in staff supervision, program administration, and crisis intervention.
  • Strong knowledge of ethical standards, legal requirements, and best practices in counseling services.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to balance administrative responsibilities with direct clinical work in a small-campus environment.
  • Strong leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Commitment to student-centered care, confidentiality, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and build trust with campus partners.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counseling services to students, as needed, including crisis intervention and risk assessment.
  • Establish and oversee clinical protocols for intake/assessment, triage, referral, confidential documentation and recordkeeping, and continuity of care.
  • Serve as a clinical consultant for complex cases and coordinate care with on- and off-campus providers.
  • Lead the university’s response to student mental health crises, collaborating with campus partners and emergency services as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Residence Life, Athletics, Campus Safety, Disability/Accessibility Services, Health Services, and other stakeholders.
  • Develop and deliver outreach programs and workshops for students on mental health and wellness suicide prevention, substance misuse, and substance use prevention.
  • Provide mental health and suicide prevention training and resources to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Serve on university committees and task forces related to student wellbeing, retention, and crisis management.
  • Collect and analyze utilization, outcomes, and satisfaction data to assess program effectiveness.
  • Use data-informed practices to recommend enhancements, expand services, and address emerging student needs.
  • Stay current with best practices, trends, and innovations in college counseling and mental health services.
