About The Position

The Director of Compliance & Budget provides strategic and operational oversight of all budgeting, financial reporting, and compliance functions for the foundation. This role ensures fiscal integrity, adherence to donor intent, and compliance with organizational policies and applicable regulations. The Director partners closely with the Managing Director of Finance and Operations and Assistant Director of Finance & Operations to ensure coordinated financial management across grants, gifts, and discretionary budgets. This includes leading budget development, monitoring financial performance, overseeing audits, and maintaining robust internal controls.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration preferred)
  • Minimum 4 years of progressive experience in nonprofit finance, budgeting, and compliance.
  • Strong understanding of grant and donor fund management.
  • Experience leading audits and implementing internal control systems.
  • Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills; experience with accounting software
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the annual budgeting process for all foundation programs, grants, and donor-funded initiatives.
  • Partner with the Managing Director of Finance and Operations and department leads to develop accurate revenue and expense projections.
  • Ensure reporting accuracy across gifts, grants, and operating accounts.
  • Maintain and continuously improve financial compliance frameworks in alignment with GAAP, and foundation policies.
  • Ensure donor-restricted and grant-restricted funds are tracked, reported, and spent in accordance with agreements.
  • Ensure Grant Agreements are reviewed and approved in a timely manner.
  • Partner with the Assistant Director of Finance & Operations to monitor procurement, payment, and reconciliation procedures.
  • Maintain budget models, forecast tools, and variance analyses to support informed decision-making.
  • Oversee midyear budget adjustments and long-term financial planning.
  • Provide budget training and support to staff responsible for spending oversight.
  • Prepare and distribute monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for leadership and board review.
  • Conduct variance analysis, trend forecasting, and scenario planning to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Collaborate with the Managing Director of Finance and Operations to present financial summaries and risk assessments to senior leadership.
  • Oversee adherence to internal approval processes for purchasing, contracting, and expense reimbursement.
  • Coordinate annual financial audits, ensure documentation accuracy, and respond to auditor inquiries.
  • Verify that reconciliation reports align with general ledger balances and financial statements.
  • Ensure discrepancies are resolved promptly and documentation is audit-ready.
  • Supervise the Grant Budget Manager and Gift Finance Specialist and provide oversight for all grant/gift-funded budgets.
  • Coordinate reconciliation between philanthropic expenditures, general ledger, and donor reporting requirements.
  • Support development and donor relations teams with financial data for stewardship and compliance reporting.
  • Lead preparation for annual external audit and any programmatic financial reviews.
  • Develop corrective action plans for audit findings and ensure timely implementation.
  • Monitor compliance with regulatory and funder requirements; maintain documentation for all restricted funds.
  • Identify potential risks and recommend policies or process improvements to mitigate them.
  • Serve as a financial thought partner to the Managing Director of Finance & Operations, providing insights for strategic decisions.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Finance & Operations to ensure operational and financial alignment.
  • Provide coaching, guidance, and support to the Grant Budget Manager, Gift Finance Specialist and other finance staff.
  • Promote transparency, efficiency, and compliance across all financial activities.
