About The Position

The Haas Center for Public Service is seeking a Director of Community Engaged Learning (DCEL) to lead the center's curricular efforts in the area of health. Reporting to the Associate Director for Community Engaged Learning and Research, this position works alongside three other DCELs, each with a distinct thematic focus (education, environmental sustainability, and engineering). Collectively, this team supports faculty across campus in developing and supporting community engaged learning courses (Cardinal Courses) and capstone experiences. The DCEL-Health builds and maintains relationships with external community organizations working to address health and related issues, and partners closely with a number of campus units engaged in relevant efforts. Working as a part of the Community Engaged Learning and Research team, and in collaboration with other campus and community partners, the DCEL - Health position will strengthen and expand community engaged learning courses, research, capstones, and internships in the area of health.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree and/or scholarly and professional accomplishments in a relevant field, indicating an ability to work as a peer with university faculty is required. Ph.D. preferred.
  • Experience with curriculum design, and teaching or facilitating learning experiences for diverse student populations.
  • Understanding of, and experience with, the principles and practice of critical service-learning and community engagement in a higher education context.
  • Academic training and/or professional experience relevant to the health field.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of or experience with health-related issues and organizations in the Bay Area is desired.
  • Teaching experience, preferably at the college level, is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and/or maintain a portfolio of community engaged learning courses (i.e., service-learning courses) that adhere to Stanford's Principles of Ethical and Effective Service and foster civic leadership competencies through sound pedagogical practices
  • Consult with faculty on community engaged learning pedagogy, including facilitating faculty trainings, designing appropriate learning goals and instructional activities, facilitating student preparation and reflection, and evaluating student learning and community impact
  • Build and sustain partnerships with nonprofit and community-based organizations, government agencies, and social impact-oriented companies, identifying reciprocal opportunities for students to learn and contribute to community partners' work.
  • Conduct outreach activities within relevant departments and programs to encourage capstone, internship, and community engaged learning course development, particularly among faculty who are not currently offering community engaged learning courses
  • Assist with marketing and communicating about community engaged learning opportunities to students
  • Write and/or edit complex content for proposals, marketing materials, deans' reports, research grants, or other program activities
  • May teach and/or assist in the teaching and administration of courses. Create and/or advise in the development of curriculum. May advise students and/or coach/mentor clients
  • Contribute as a member of the DCEL team on the administration of Cardinal Courses and related programs, including managing Cardinal Course grants, reviewing Cardinal Service Notation applications, among other responsibilities
  • Participate in center-wide and team-level programming, events, meetings, and collaborative initiatives as part of the Haas Center staff and CELR team
