About The Position

The director of BHS will create and execute a strategic plan for hospital's behavioral health department focused on continued progression and optimal growth. The director should be knowledgeable on preparedness and regulatory accreditations to ensure the department is in compliance with these standards. This leaders should have strong interpersonal skills as they will meet with external agencies to discuss future opportunities for growth and partnership. The director will establish an environment of teamwork among staff and set goals to improve physician recruitment and retention.

Requirements

  • Must possess a BSN, a MSN in psychiatric nursing is preferred.
  • The director of psychiatric nursing services must be a registered nurse who’s degree, education, and experience demonstrates competence to participate in the care of the mentally ill.
  • BLS required.
  • Completion of CPI required.
  • Able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently.
  • Possess physical agility and adequate reaction time to respond quickly and appropriately to unexpected patient care needs.
  • Needs adequate hearing and visual acuity, including adequate color vision.
  • Requires fine motor skills, adequate eye-hand coordination, and ability to grasp and handle objects.
  • Able to use proper body mechanics to assist patients in ambulating, transferring in and out of bed, chair or wheelchair.
  • May be required to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Must use standard precautions due to threat of exposure to blood and bodily fluids.
  • Needs ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on telephone.
  • May require periodic use of personal computer.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and facilitates patient centered nursing care for designated patient populations by serving as a real-time clinical expert for unit staff and physicians for escalated problem-solving on patients, processes, and family issues. Manages the operations of the unit to ensure smooth and efficient patient care management and resource utilization.
  • Leads change by developing, implementing and evaluating quality and process improvement initiatives of the department in conjunction with the director. Seeks and utilizes input from staff and oversees change implementation. Ensures compliance with appropriate regulatory agencies.
  • Facilitates communication of system, regional, facility and department initiatives.
  • Manages and develops the operational and capital budgets and use of associated resources.
  • Assures the development of staff leadership through the design of effective shared leadership models and supports career advancement opportunities. Functions as a role model and encourages staff to participate in their own development.
  • Responsible for selection, orientation, on-boarding, and retention. Demonstrates leadership through coaching, performance evaluations, corrective actions, and development opportunities to create a culture of learning.
