About The Position

Under the administrative direction of the Associate Dean of Students, in the Division of Student Life, the Director of Food+Shelter+Success (Basic Needs) supports the academic mission of the University by providing vision, leadership, and strategic direction for a wide array of culturally competent basic needs programs, services, and initiatives. Basic Needs programs enhance students’ capacities to be active, engaged, and successful learners, and include the development, delivery, and evaluation of systemic and sustainable interventions that ameliorate basic needs in a manner that promotes dignity and minimizes marginalization. The Director provides supervision and coaching to a team of four professional staff, numerous undergraduate/graduate interns and volunteers, manages an annual budget of $1.5 million, and works closely with the Dean of Students Office, the Division of Student Life managers, and stakeholders across Student Affairs & Enrollment Management and the University. The Director serves as a key member of the divisional and Cabinet area leadership groups, participating in strategic planning, outcomes assessment, programs and policy development, and decision making. The Director oversees the development and implementation of a comprehensive array of evidence-based basic needs and economic stability programs, designed for 21st century students on an urban campus that serves a high proportion of 1st generation, low-income, and underrepresented racial minority students. The Director is responsible for the research and preparation of grant porposals to secure resources that address the basic needs of our ethnically and culturally diverse student population. The Director must incorporate educational equity, social justice, cultural humility, anddiversity concepts and principles into all work.

Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, social work, or related field; OR 4 years of full-time progressively responsible experience in basic needs, social services, community development, student affairs, higher education, student services, wellness programs, with at least two years of experience in a coordinator or manager role in Basic Needs.
  • This position requires the successful completion of a background check.
  • Applicants must be able to provide proof of US Citizenship or authorization to work in the United States, within three business days from their date of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership for assessing, planning, and implementation of the administrative activities of Basic Needs.
  • Oversee, supervise, and manage performance and operations of Basic Needs staff, who are each independently responsible for determining and providing basic needs support and services to over 15,000 propsective and current students working to meet their basic needs. The Basic Needs staff is a group of professional exempt staff members including: Basic Needs Program Coordinator (SSPIII, 1.0 FTE); CalFresh Outreach Coordinator (SSPIII, 1.0 FTE); Basic Needs Coordinator with Housing Emphasis (SSPIII, 1.0 FTE); the Housing Stability Coordinator (SSPIII, 1.0 FTE); the Health Communications Coordinator (PACS II, .5 FTE); the Administrative Analyst Specialist (AA/S, .5 FTE); student leaders for basic needs, and CalFresh outreach student leaders.
  • Develop and periodically update short and long term strategic plans defining goals and measurable outcomes based on studies, research, data analysis, and consultation with students, the Basic Needs team, student life/student development professionals, health services colleagues, and campus keyholders.
  • Create and maintain ongoing assessment plans to measure Basic Needs outcomes to ensure effectiveness of programs and activities in support of Student Success initiatives.
  • Prepare timely, accurate, professional, and ethincal reports of program activities and departmental staff.
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with on- and off-campus stakeholders that support a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and integrated approach to basic needs.
  • Activity engage campus academic departments and administrative units across all cabinet areas, as well as Associated Students to build a unified campus community focusing on the holistic student, especially as it relates to stabilizing students’ basic needs.
  •  Shepherd fiscal, human, facility, and other resources to support unit mission and priorities in a responsible manner.
  • Serve as an active member of division and cabinet area leadership groups, and other university committees, task forces, and other assigned or appointed position.
  • Act as Chair of the SF State Basic Needs Committee, Chair of the SparkPoint working group, and serve as the primary contact for the CSU System Wide Basic Needs Initiative.
  • Identify and prepare grant proposals that support SF State basic needs programs and align with the mission and values of Basic Needs.
  • Manage extramural and Chancellor’s Office funding from grants, gifts, and contracts, and ensure that all goals and deliverables of funding awards and funding agreements are met appropriately, adequately, and timely.
  • Cultivate potential donors in close collaboration with the Office of the Vice President for University Advancement.
  • Support and develop opportunities for research and evaluation into the impact of basic needs programs and identify areas of best practice in the field, including cultivating faculty partnerships to expand current research knowledge base and participating in system wide research projects.
  • Fosters and promotes the Principles of Conduct for a Multicultural University and User Friendly Principles.
  • Promotes and ensures the application of human resources professional responsibilities and ethical standards.
  • Incumbent will need to demonstrate appropriate flexibility and be prepared to adjust responsibilities on an “as needed” basis in response to changing workplace priorities and constituency demands.
