About The Position

SUNY Ulster County Community College, a two-year branch of the State University of New York located ninety miles north of New York City in the Catskill Mountains, is currently accepting applications for a Director of Admissions. Reporting to the Dean of Enrollment and Student Success Management, the Director of Admissions is responsible for overseeing the admissions process and first-year advising services within the Enrollment Success Center at SUNY Ulster. This role will lead a team in guiding prospective students through the admissions process, advising students to help them achieve their educational goals. The Director will collaborate with faculty, staff, and administration to ensure an integrated, student-centered approach to enrollment and academic success.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five years of experience in admissions, with at least three years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of the needs of community college students, including first-generation, non-traditional, and underrepresented students.
  • Demonstrated successful experience with student recruitment, retention, and student success strategies.
  • Knowledge of advising best practices, enrollment management, and relevant technology (e.g., student information systems, advising tools).
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate a team to achieve enrollment goals.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with diverse stakeholders.
  • Commitment to student-centered values and inclusive practices in higher education.
  • Commitment to community college goals and objectives of providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, student affairs, or a related field required.
  • Experience working in a community college environment.
  • Familiarity with federal and state financial aid processes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of SLATE CRM.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Admissions, Veterans and placement testing staff within the Enrollment Success Center (ESC), ensuring efficient processing of applications and inquiries.
  • Develop, implement, and assess recruitment strategies to attract diverse, high-quality applicants, including adult learners and special populations.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional policies, including FERPA regulations and admissions standards.
  • Maintain and analyze data on enrollment trends, providing recommendations for improving recruitment strategies.
  • Work with the marketing department to create outreach materials and promote the college’s programs.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with high schools, and community organizations.
  • Supervise and support admissions staff in implementing professional advisement in order to guide students through enrollment, course selection, degree planning, and academic policies.
  • Provide professional development opportunities for professional advisors to stay current with advising best practices, policies, and trends.
  • Monitor and track student advising progress to ensure students are on track to meet graduation requirements.
  • Work with other support service offices to develop initiatives to support student retention, including early intervention strategies for students facing academic challenges.
  • Collaborate with other departments to address student concerns, from financial aid to counseling services, ensuring students have the support they need to succeed.
  • Use data-driven approaches to identify at-risk students and work to implement retention strategies.
  • Organize workshops, seminars, and events to improve student success and engagement.
  • Collaborate with college leadership to develop and implement long-term enrollment strategies.
  • Lead and participate in institutional committees related to enrollment, advising, and student success.
  • Provide regular reports and presentations to senior administration on admissions and professional advising outcomes and challenges.
  • Participate in regional and national professional organizations related to admissions and professional advising.
  • Hire, train, and evaluate staff to ensure high performance and professional development.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and student-centered work environment.
  • Manage the budget for the admissions department efficiently.
