Einstein receives for than $215 million in NIH funding each year and support NIH-designated research centers in cancer, aging, AIDS, intellectual and developmental disorders, clinical and translational research and type II diabetes. Montefiore provides care to approximately three million people in communities across the Bronx, Manhattan, Westchester and Hudson Valley. It comprises 10 hospitals and over 200 outpatient ambulatory care sites. The Director of Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center (MECCC) and Vice President of Cancer Medicine will serve as the executive leader responsible for advancing the Center’s mission and vision, driving scientific excellence, and ensuring the Center’s continued distinction as a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Director reports to the Dean of Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the President and CEO of Montefiore Einstein and serves as chief cancer advisor to the Dean and CEO.

Requirements

The successful candidate for the role of Director of the MECCC and Vice President for Cancer Medicine will be an accomplished executive leader in cancer research, with a national and international reputation of scientific discovery and translation to new paradigms in cancer care and community impact. The Director will bring vision, capacity, innovation, integrity, and partnership to lead the Center.
MD, PhD or equivalent degree required. Nationally and internationally recognized scientist with sustained and active peer-reviewed funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and/or NCI (or equivalent).
Accomplished progressive senior leadership experience in a complex academic environment within an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center, having served as Center Director, Deputy Director, Associate Director, or another comparable leadership role.
Demonstrated visionary and strategic leadership with outcomes and impact to advance the mission of MECCC. Proven experience in leading and managing the culture and values inherent to NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers.
Proven experience in managing the complex processes and rigor required as part of the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) application review processes.
A demonstrated record of building and managing effective multi-disciplinary teams who are comfortable to innovate, flex, and manage change.
Proven background in recruitment, mentoring, and development of outstanding faculty and staff.
Proven experience in transdisciplinary research with ability to expand revenue streams through strategic partnership with external funding agencies.
Experience in building strategic and trusted relationships to advance the vision, mission, and collaborative culture of MECCC.
Proven ability to lead and manage the financial health of MECCC in an environment with complex revenue streams.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills; relentless ability to inspire collaboration while navigating diverse organizational needs and advocating for MECCC, considered a driving force within Montefiore Einstein.

Responsibilities

The Director is responsible and accountable for all administrative functions and operations related to the Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG), including submission of competing and non-competing renewal applications, and developing the strategic priorities related to all facets of the NCI designation, inclusive of governance, basic, translational, clinical and population science, clinical trials, clinical care, education and training, and community outreach and engagement.
The Director is responsible for the exceptional performance of all CCSG-supported components, including the six essential characteristics, four translational research programs, eight shared resources, strategic planning and evaluation, governance and overall impact to reduce the burden of cancer in the Bronx.
Critical to the success of the Center is sustained growth in the research portfolio and acceleration of translational research through investment in Einstein’s basic science and in innovative clinical trials, as well as in the development of novel therapeutics across the Montefiore Health System.
The Director will lead efforts to align cancer priorities and scientific excellence across Montefiore Einstein, leveraging expertise across departments, centers and institutes, and will serve on all Einstein and Montefiore Health System governing committees to lead cancer-relevant initiatives. These include faculty recruitment, space, informatics, shared resources/core facilities, clinical care delivery, clinical research, clinical expansion, philanthropy, and a nascent clinical trials network.
The Director will develop a cancer enterprise steering committee and partner with the Center’s Associate Director for Clinical Services to oversee the expansion and integration of the cancer service line and MECCC mission. The steering committee will engage leaders across Montefiore Einstein to advance the impact of the cancer service line across the Montefiore Health System.
The Director will oversee the budget and finances for the Center and the strategic allocation of all resources, inclusive of Institutional Commitment (internal funds), clinical research income, pilot projects, space, and philanthropy to stimulate and facilitate innovative science and translational research.
The Director will strengthen and advance MECCC’s community outreach and engagement initiatives through collaboration with community partners to facilitate research and reduce the burden of cancer in the Bronx. The Director will promote the Center’s pathway programs for Bronx high school and undergraduate students to create a sustained pipeline to train the next generation of cancer researchers.
The Director will promote training and mentor early- and mid-career investigators and champion faculty success across all career stages. The Director will provide support and direction for all cancer-relevant, large, multi-investigator grants and support team science relevant to the Bronx community we serve.
The Director will develop strategic priorities and lead fundraising initiatives for cancer-related philanthropy across the College and Montefiore Medicine.
The Director will promote the seamless coordination of all marketing and public relations efforts related to the research, clinical care, education, and community outreach and engagement across the College of Medicine and Montefiore Medicine.
The Director will review academic reappointments/promotions of MECCC faculty and provide input to the relevant Department
As mandated by the NCI, the Cancer Center assumes responsibility for the oversight, conduct, and reporting of all required elements relevant to cancer clinical research.
