The Director Materials Management is responsible for the leadership, planning, and oversight of all procurement, inventory control, and distribution of materials, equipment, and supplies across the hospital and system sites. This role ensures that all materials management activities are efficient, cost-effective, and aligned with the organization’s strategic and operational goals. The Director leads the supply chain team in maintaining reliable, compliant, and customer-focused services that support safe, high-quality patient care.Core Job ResponsibilitiesLeadership and Operations Direct and oversee all purchasing, inventory control, receiving, distribution and other functions of the Materials Management function. Develop, implement and review policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure timely and efficient procurement and distribution of materials. Lead the sourcing and vendor selection process to achieve optimal value, quality, and service. Manage purchasing processes from request for proposal (RFP) through delivery and payment. Monitor supply chain performance metrics, identify opportunities for improvement, and drive operational efficiencies. Ensure the availability of critical medical and non-medical supplies while managing costs and minimizing waste. Financial and Strategic Management Negotiate and execute contracts or service agreements with vendors in collaboration with leadership and legal teams. Maintain strong relationships with group purchasing organizations (GPOs) and leverage contracts to maximize savings. Continually evaluate products and services offered by existing and prospective vendors. Participate in planning, capital budgeting, and system-wide initiatives related to supply chain optimization. Develop and manage departmental budgets, ensuring fiscal responsibility and cost containment. Compliance and Quality Accountable for compliance with all regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and hospital policies. Maintain appropriate documentation for purchasing, receiving, and inventory transactions. Collaborate with clinical and support departments to ensure product standardization and compliance with infection prevention, safety standards, and user preferences. Lead continuous improvement initiatives related to sustainability, supply chain resilience, and emergency preparedness. Team Leadership and Development Serve as a mentor to staff, promoting professional growth and operational excellence. Ensure all team members have the training, tools and resources to perform their jobs. Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, trust, teamwork, and service excellence within the department and with all stakeholders. In partnership with leadership and Human Resources, make recommendations related to performance management, hiring, transfers, corrective actions, terminations, etc. Resolve staff issues and grievances in a fair, timely and consistent manner, also in partnership with HR. Perform other duties as required.
