The Director, Maintenance is a high-level leadership position responsible for managing and optimizing maintenance operations across multiple locations. This role ensures the consistent performance, safety, and reliability of Class 8 trucks and trailers, while driving operational excellence and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Summary of Essential Job Functions Oversee maintenance operations for Class 8 trucks and trailers across multiple locations. Develop and implement strategic maintenance plans to achieve optimal fleet performance and reduce downtime. Ensure compliance with regulatory and safety standards across all facilities. Manage budgets for maintenance operations, including cost optimization initiatives. Lead a team of shop managers. Regional managers and maintenance staff, providing mentorship and direction. Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess operational efficiency and identify opportunities for improvement. Collaborate with executive leadership to align maintenance strategies with organizational goals. Establish training programs to enhance technician skills and promote employee development. Maintain strong vendor relationships to ensure timely access to parts and resources. Facilitate communication between locations to promote consistency and share best practices. Conduct regular audits of facilities and equipment to ensure adherence to standards. Other duties as assigned. Fleet Maintenance Leadership Develop and execute comprehensive maintenance strategies for the company’s fleet of tractors and trailers. Oversee preventive maintenance (PM), inspections, repairs, and warranty recovery programs across all maintenance facilities and mobile operations. Establish and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensure consistent execution company-wide. Team & Vendor Management Lead and manage maintenance managers, technicians, and support staff across multiple locations. Evaluate and oversee relationships with third-party vendors, parts suppliers, and service providers. Ensure proper staffing, training, certification, and performance development across the maintenance organization. Compliance & Safety Ensure full compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and EPA regulations. Manage vehicle inspections, compliance audits, licensing, and reporting requirements. Drive a safety-first culture within the maintenance department and ensure all repairs and inspections are conducted to the highest safety standards. Budgeting & Cost Control Develop and manage maintenance budgets, including labor, parts, capital expenditures, and external services. Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives while maintaining or improving service quality and reliability. Monitor KPIs such as cost per mile, maintenance spend per unit, breakdown frequency, and fleet availability. Systems & Process Optimization Leverage fleet management and maintenance software (e.g., TMW, Fleetio, or similar) to improve data accuracy, scheduling, and reporting. Identify process improvements and implement best practices in predictive maintenance, inventory management, and downtime reduction. Analyze failure trends and root causes to drive corrective action. Strategic Planning Collaborate with leadership to support long-term asset planning, fleet lifecycle management, and equipment specification decisions. Support acquisition and integration of new equipment, technology, and facilities as the company grows.
