About The Position
Expedia is seeking a Director of Machine Learning Science (MLS) to lead our team of scientists dedicated to our travel insurance business. This role is pivotal as travel insurance represents a significant and expanding segment of our company, offering numerous opportunities for innovation and optimization. The Director of MLS will be responsible for establishing the roadmap and owning the OKRs for machine learning systems that power our insurance business. This includes utilizing the latest machine learning and AI technologies to enhance our travelers' insurance purchasing and discovery experience on both app and web platforms. The position requires a proactive approach to prioritize the team's efforts between platform migration and experimenting with new features, while fostering cross-functional partnerships with stakeholders, including product management, engineering, customer care, and supply teams. In this role, you will collaborate with multiple product teams to make decisions and prioritize requirements, driving innovation, technical excellence, and delivering business impacts that improve conversion rates, loyalty, and overall traveler experience. You will operate with a broad business perspective and technical depth, understanding company goals while navigating and influencing the EG data platform and ML technology stacks. Additionally, you will be responsible for recruiting, developing, and managing highly skilled and independent applied machine learning scientists in a complex environment, contributing to the growth of a larger data science and analytics community within Expedia Group. The ideal candidate will have a graduate degree in a quantitative field or equivalent experience, with a proven track record of designing and delivering high-impact machine learning projects and products from concept to completion. Extensive, up-to-date knowledge and hands-on experience with machine learning and data engineering technologies such as Kubernetes, Spark, Databricks, and GPU are essential. A proactive, problem-solving mindset with the ability to simplify complexity and translate high-level business requirements into specific projects is crucial for success in this role.
