About The Position

SUMMARY: The Director of Loss Prevention reports to the President Lifespan Risk Services, Inc. (LRS). Directs and manages the loss prevention activities within Brown University Health Risk Management program to minimize financial and legal risks to Brown University Health facilities and its physician practices and provides Risk Management services to closely affiliated third-party physician practices. RESPONSIBILITIES: Consistently applies the corporate values of respect, honesty and fairness and the constant pursuit of excellence in improving the health status of the people of the region through the provision of customer-friendly, geographically accessible and high-value services within the environment of a comprehensive, integrated academic health system. Is responsible for knowing and acting in accordance with the principles of the Brown University Health Corporate Compliance Program and Code of Conduct. Conducts or directs various clinical risk management surveys within Brown University Health facilities and physician practices to minimize risk of adverse patient outcome and/or litigation. Uses various internal and external data sources, including Brown University Health, local, regional and national claims data to identify potentialctual areas of risk. Provides clinical risk management support for physician practices covered by the Brown University Health malpractice Plan. Maintains expertise in physician office related regulatory and risk issues. Designs and implements financial incentives that support initiatives intended to improve performance and reduce malpractice exposure. Works with physician Quality Improvement Coordinators and physician practice administrators to promote and facilitate implementation of indemnified physician incentive goals. Directs the LRS educational programs by obtaining input from physician groups and others, designing and delivering educational programs to physicians, nurses and other care providers that support patient safety initiatives and minimize financial and legal exposures to the system. Performs risk analysis on new ventures to assess potential risks and provides risk prevention information. Maintains all Risk Management Continuing Medical Education (CME) series. Reviews and approves program content submitted for Risk Management CME credits. Directs the Risk Management Grant Programs. Monitors status of past grant award projects, facilitates awardees efforts to complete projects and disseminate information. Within Brown University Health affiliates, analyzes processes in proactive manner to minimize the risk of adverse patient outcome and /or litigation. Facilitates resolution of these risks by working collaboratively with affiliate-based staff. Contributes materials related to loss prevention to various Brown University Health publications and prepares other educational documents that support Brown University Health mission. Works in conjunction with LRS claims department to monitor and standardize claims data to identify favorable and unfavorable tends. Provides assistance to facility-based Risk Managers to identify areas of improvement and assist with facility-based Loss Prevention programs. Directs the preparation of reports from the claims data to be used for risk analysis and education. Directs the provider peer support program to assist physicians and others deal with the stress of malpractice litigation or unexpected adverse outcomes. Working with claims and risk management staff, develops educational programs for clinical risk management and LRS staff. Coordinates the activities of the Physician Claims Review Committee, which assists with the analysis of malpractice claims. Works with claims staff and attorneys to prepare materials for the meetings. Participates in various Brown University Health committees or task forces, especially on quality, patient safety and risk reduction activities. Assists in cultivating working relationship with Warren Alpert School of Medicine and works with them to develop Risk Management educational programs for medical students. Represents Brown University Health on various local, regional and national risk management associations and committees that influence the design and implementation of various risk management initiatives, products and service Maintains current knowledge and expertise in field of loss prevention by regularly participating in related professional organizations, attending seminars and by review of current literature. Working with the Director of Insurance &Business Operations, provide clinical underwriting support. Coordinate outside firm bench marking activities. Performs other duties as requested by the President, Lifespan Risk Services. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration or related field.
  • Five years related experience working in healthcare risk management environment, with focus on proactive risk assessments, development/presentation of educational programs and analyzing complex claims and clinical outcome data.
  • Experience demonstrating statistical orientation is preferred.
  • Experience must also demonstrate knowledge of computers as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Supervises the Underwriting and Loss prevention Specialist.
  • Also provides supervision related to Loss Prevention activities to administrative staff.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or equivalent in legal or healthcare-related field is preferred.
  • Experience demonstrating statistical orientation is preferred.
