About The Position

The Labor Relations Director at GAF is responsible for developing and executing strategies to ensure positive labor relations across the organization. This role involves collaboration with leadership, Human Resources, and Legal to manage all aspects of labor relations, particularly concerning collective bargaining unit employees. The director will oversee compliance with collective bargaining agreements and federal and state employment regulations, while also providing consultation, training, and conflict resolution. Additionally, the position includes developing a comprehensive union avoidance strategy for non-union plants.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) or equivalent experience in Human Resources, business or related field.
  • 5+ years of demonstrated labor relations experience including grievance, contract administration, and negotiations.
  • 7 years of Human Resources experience.
  • Direct experience with writing and interpreting collective bargaining agreements.
  • Experience handling and resolving grievance procedures and preparing for arbitration sessions.
  • First chair negotiating experience for union contract negotiations.
  • Demonstrated advanced problem solving, conflict resolution, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Strong public speaking, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to function effectively in an intense labor relations environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Arts/Sciences (MA/MS) in HR or related field.
  • First chair / primary negotiating experience for union contract negotiations.
  • Formal conflict mediation experience or training.
  • Labor Relations and/or HR experience in a large manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes a labor relations strategy in collaboration with GAF leadership, Human Resources, and Legal.
  • Facilitates communication between company leadership, operations leadership, union leadership, and legal counsel regarding bargaining unit employees.
  • Represents GAF as chief spokesperson in collective bargaining negotiations for comprehensive agreements across multiple bargaining units.
  • Promotes collaborative labor relations consistent with collective bargaining agreements and business objectives.
  • Reviews and analyzes collective bargaining agreements and personnel policies to develop recommended bargaining positions.
  • Ensures adherence to the terms of collective bargaining agreements across all areas of GAF.
  • Coaches and counsels management and HR on the interpretation and administration of collective bargaining agreements.
  • Conducts investigations and resolves employee complaints and grievances.
  • Assists with arbitration proceedings preparation and execution.
  • Maintains knowledge of and ensures compliance with labor and employment laws.
  • Prepares statistical reports on labor relations activities to identify trends and metrics.
  • Partners with HR to develop integrated solutions and policies in support of business strategy.
  • Develops and provides training for managers and HR professionals on collective bargaining agreements.
  • Manages a union avoidance strategy for non-union plants.
