About The Position

The Director of Labor Relations at Mount Sinai Hospital is responsible for the day-to-day administration of labor relations policies and collective bargaining agreements. This role involves directing subordinates and ensuring adherence to established policies and practices. The Director serves as the chief negotiator for selected collective bargaining agreements and develops and implements corrective actions to limit sources of employee conflicts and grievances, thereby improving the employee relations climate. Additionally, the Director assists in the development of Medical Center-wide policies and procedures to ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements and relevant labor legislation.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Labor & Industrial Relations or equivalent experience.
  • Three to five years of progressive experience within a large, multiple-bargaining unit organization, preferably within a health care organization.
  • Experience in direct administration and negotiation of collective bargaining agreements.
  • Oversight of unemployment insurance program administration and representation at judicial proceedings.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for labor relations at the Affiliates and Mount Sinai Queens.
  • Oversees day-to-day administration of labor relations policies and collective bargaining agreements; interprets agreements and policies and provides advice and guidance to managers.
  • Directs and monitors work of subordinates, ensuring adherence to established policies and practices.
  • Interviews, hires, trains, develops, evaluates, disciplines, and discharges assigned subordinates.
  • Serves as principal spokesperson and chief negotiator during negotiations for selected collective bargaining agreement renewals.
  • Assists in developing strategies and coordinating preparations for negotiations for collective bargaining agreement renewals.
  • Directs employee relations activities and investigates sources of grievances; develops and recommends corrective actions.
  • Advises managers on communications approaches, progressive discipline, documentation, and dispute resolution.
  • Develops and conducts training programs related to labor and employee relations for Medical Center supervisors and managers.
  • Oversees preparations for employee conflict hearings and investigations involving various labor relations bodies.
  • Recommends and assists in the implementation of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements.
  • Confers regularly with bargaining unit representatives to review labor-management relations and improve employee relations climate.
  • Develops, secures approval of, and implements plans, budgets, policies, and procedures to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Implements documentation and reporting mechanisms to measure institutional performance in labor and employee relations.
  • Serves on various Medical Center committees concerned with the development of new programs and resolution of management problems.
