About The Position

The Director, International Construction is responsible for managing all aspects of the design and construction process to support our international markets’ efforts to open clubs in a timely and cost-effective manner. In addition to new club construction, this individual will also be responsible for overseeing conversion projects, re-modeling initiatives and relocations. The Director, International Construction will play a key role in supporting the opening of 50+ clubs each year and working closely with several international franchisees’ construction teams; this is a field-focused role which will require international travel and strong cross-cultural communication skills. The Director, International Construction will support international franchisees’ efforts to manage vendor and contractor relationships related to club build outs and partner with international franchisees on all construction-related issues. This individual will continually develop Planet Fitness’ brand and retail physical environment to uphold a seamless integration of architectural, brand, graphics, technology standards and the overall construction success. The ideal candidate currently resides near a major international airport in Dallas, TX, Miami, FL, or Los Angeles, CA.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management or a related field (preferred)
  • 10+ years of experience in office and field construction management for multi-unit fitness or retail organizations
  • Multi-lingual skills strongly preferred, with the ability to travel and operate independently in international markets and diverse cultural settings
  • Ability and willingness to travel 50–70% of the time, including some nights and weekends; currently resides near a major airport
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Strong cross-cultural communication skills, able to engage effectively in environments from the jobsite to the boardroom
  • Proven experience managing general contractors and collaborating with project managers, subcontractors, and vendors
  • Practical experience managing capital budgets, with financial acumen and understanding of accounting principles
  • Knowledge of building codes and jobsite trades in applicable countries
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to make independent decisions and solve complex problems quickly and effectively
  • Extremely detail-oriented, efficient, and organized with an exceptional ability to establish priorities and objectives
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills along with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization

Responsibilities

  • Manages the international club construction pipeline and oversees related project timelines in close cooperation with international franchisees’ construction teams; responsible for meeting club opening deadlines across international markets.
  • Develops effective relationships with international franchisees’ construction teams and supports their efforts to manage the workstreams of local contractors, suppliers, architects and vendors.
  • Performs on-site evaluations throughout the construction process to ensure clubs are being built to brand standards and in accordance with project schedule and within budget.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements as well as branding and signage standards; communicates Planet Fitness standards through international franchisees to local contractors, suppliers, architects and vendors.
  • Possesses a thorough and detailed understanding of Design Control Documents and related project management tools.
  • Ensures delivery of branded elements and prototypical standards in every club while communicating design and construction modifications accurately and effectively to the franchisees, vendors, field, architects, and general contractors.
  • Assists international franchisees with scope of work and required construction schedules as needed.
  • Involved in the data collection and review as needed of build-out costs in order to provide cost analysis of individual projects.
  • Supports international franchisees’ construction teams through pre-construction, construction and close-out; compiles progress reports, photos and checklists.
  • As part of the International Development team, works closely with cross-functional teams including Operations, Finance, Procurement, Marketing, Equipment.
  • Travels extensively throughout the assigned international region.
  • Attends international franchisee pipeline calls and provides regular updates to cross-functional teams.
  • Responsible for weekly updates to construction project pipeline report.

  • This is a good faith estimate, and the amount of base salary will correspond with a candidate’s professional experience, qualifications and internal equity.
  • Annual Base Salary Range (location specific to Dallas, TX, Miami, FL, and Los Angeles, CA): $120,000-$160,000
