About the position

The Mukilteo School District is seeking a Communications and Public Relations Director I to provide leadership, strategic vision, and supervision of the District's communication and marketing programs. This position will involve internal and external communications and various public relations functions, serving as a member of the Superintendent's Cabinet. The anticipated start date for this full-time position is July 1, 2025, and it is based at the District Office. The role requires a commitment to the District's equity focus, particularly in eliminating racism and inequities for students.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the District's communications and marketing programs to promote the School District's mission.
  • Provide public relations counsel in a proactive approach, anticipating problems and providing solutions.
  • Serve as District liaison with staff, community, parents, businesses, civic organizations, and press and media.
  • Communicate with internal and external publics, demonstrating cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Handle all aspects of the School District's publications, including newsletters and social media.
  • Oversee district website content and social media channels.
  • Prepare and edit speech materials for District leadership.
  • Develop budget-related informational campaigns and publications.
  • Conduct research to determine public opinion and attitudes.
  • Write news releases for local media and serve as the School District's liaison to the media.
  • Develop a communications plan for the District.
  • Manage crisis response communications.
  • Plan and organize special events.
  • Perform personnel functions to enhance productivity.
  • Engage in continuing education for professional growth.
  • Complete and submit reports as required.
  • Fulfill legal responsibilities and comply with federal and state laws.
  • Maintain consistent attendance and conform to regular work hours.

Requirements

  • Degree in Communication, Public Relations, or related field.
  • Minimum of three years' experience in communications-related field.
  • Knowledge of current public relations, marketing, and journalism practices.
  • Knowledge of crisis response protocols.
  • Knowledge of laws related to public schools.

  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
