The Director of Government and Community Relations for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is a pivotal role responsible for directing, managing, and leading outreach efforts to elected officials, municipal officials, and community stakeholders within the LIRR territory. This position involves supervising the activities of the LIRR's Government Relations staff and managing the communications team. The Director will work closely with the Interim Deputy Chief of State and Local Government and Community Affairs to oversee all division workflows, delegate assignments, and review deliverables on critical, high-profile projects. The role requires a strategic approach to managing relationships with various stakeholders to cultivate support for LIRR's capital projects and address community concerns. In this capacity, the Director will serve as the primary point of contact for elected officials, municipal officials, community boards, business leaders, and advocates. The responsibilities include tracking and directing capital program outreach, negotiating project agreements with municipalities, and responding to inquiries and complaints from constituents. The Director will also formulate strategic policy recommendations based on community interests and participate in discussions with the LIRR executive team to incorporate public concerns into LIRR's plans. Additionally, the role involves representing LIRR at community meetings, public hearings, and press events, ensuring effective communication of LIRR news and services to external stakeholders. The Director will be responsible for fostering collaboration among government affairs staff across agency lines, working closely with the MTA and its sister agencies to ensure a unified vision and strategy that aligns with LIRR's goals. This position also includes selecting, developing, and motivating personnel within the department, providing career development opportunities, and maintaining a professional environment that respects individual differences. Other duties may be assigned as necessary, and the role may require working outside of normal hours, including evenings and weekends, as well as potential travel to other MTA locations or external sites.
