About The Position

POSITION SUMMARY: The Director, Government Affairs, manages the company’s federal government and regulatory efforts including developing and implementing strategies that protect and enhance Republic’s business, operations and brand, and advance Company goals. The Director, Government Affairs ensures organizational consistency and visibility with government decision makers at the federal level, ensures company compliance with all political and lobbying activities, and assists in maintaining the highest ethical standards through improved training, communications and cooperative efforts. The Director, Government Affairs also provides leadership, support and expertise to the Executive Vice Presidents, Senior Vice Presidents, Area Presidents, and other functional leaders throughout the organization through regular briefings and timely reporting on project status. In addition, this professional will collaborate on a regular basis with various internal stakeholders on federal public affairs and governmental affairs projects. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop and support the implementation of a comprehensive federal government affairs strategy to advance the Company’s strategic objectives and policy priorities Monitor, analyze and respond to federal legislation, regulation and budget initiatives that impact the Company; identify targeted legislative and regulatory opportunities and create strategies to convert these into law or regulations Manage outside lobbying and/or consulting teams to represent the Company during the legislative or regulatory development process; assess the effectiveness of the lobbying/consulting teams via tangible outcomes Draft position papers, policy briefs testimony and comments on proposed regulations; engage with communications team to prepare and produce external collateral and resources to effectively educate, engage and communicate Company positions Build bipartisan relationships with Members of Congress, congressional staff, and federal agencies including the EPA and DOE Represent the Company in industry coalitions, trade associations and advocacy groups and align with partner organizations on policy messaging Communicate legislative and regulatory developments to internal leadership and stakeholders and advise on impacts and opportunities Ensure compliance with federal lobbying disclosure and ethics laws Manage federal political contributions and PAC strategy in coordination with legal and compliance teams Perform other job-related duties and functions as required or assigned.

Requirements

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Strong understanding of waste, transportation or environmental policy landscape
  • Excellent instincts, analytical skills and creative problem solving.
  • A team player with impeccable judgment, the highest ethical standards and ability to manage multiple people, projects, and competing deadlines.
  • 5-10 years of direct responsibility working in federal government relations, preferably within the environmental, energy, waste or sustainability sectors
  • Established network.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in related government affairs, lobbying or public affairs activities.

Responsibilities
