About The Position

The Director of the Flow Cytometry Facility at Cornell University's Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC) is responsible for leading and managing the core facility that supports research across the Cornell Ithaca campus and external institutions. This role involves overseeing operations, personnel management, financial management, and user training, while ensuring the facility remains at the forefront of flow cytometry technology and services.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology, Biomedical Science, or related field.
  • Minimum of three years post-PhD experience in flow cytometry and cell sorting instrumentation.
  • Five or more years of experience preferred in flow cytometry technologies, protocols, strategies, sample preparation, and data analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to work extensively with a broad range of academic users, including faculty.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience with data-driven analysis and management for instrument usage, cost, and forecasting for cost recovery financial management.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues and keep instruments operating efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Personnel management and training for facility staff and students.
  • Maintaining a portfolio of advanced flow cytometry instrumentation and associated software.
  • Establishing operating and maintenance protocols, as well as quantitative metrics, to ensure instrumentation is operating safely and effectively.
  • Financial management for cost recovery operations, including tracking usage metrics, establishing service rates, and managing facility budget.
  • Developing and overseeing user training programs, advanced-use seminars, and user groups for new instrumentation and emerging technologies.
  • Identifying and pursuing instrumentation and funding opportunities for procurement of new instruments, including collaborative proposals and grant-writing.
  • Preparing and presenting periodic operating reports to facility advisory board.
  • Consulting with diverse academic researchers on flow cytometry strategies for accomplishing research goals, including research project design, sample preparation, and data analysis.
  • Promoting the use and operations of the facility through outreach and print/electronic media.
