About The Position

The Director, Finance is responsible for leading key accounting functions and partnering with accounting leadership to ensure effective oversight of the department, including month-end and year-end close processes, and the preparation of financial statements and ad hoc reporting. This role works closely with the Senior Manager, Accounting and serves as a key leader in driving financial accuracy, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement. This is a hands-on leadership role, responsible for guiding the team through both steady-state operations and high-pressure periods. The Director, Finance oversees federal awards and restricted grants, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements, and leads the annual financial audit, including coordination with external auditors. Additionally, this role evaluates and strengthens policies, procedures, and internal controls, while supporting the annual budget and forecasting process. The Controller is also responsible for building and developing a high-performing team, fostering accountability, and promoting a culture of problem-solving and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Proven leadership experience managing and developing accounting teams, including coaching, performance management, and building accountability.
  • Experience overseeing month-end and year-end close processes, with a track record of improving timeliness and accuracy.
  • Experience managing external audits, including preparing audit schedules and coordinating with auditors.
  • Strong technical accounting expertise, including GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls.
  • Experience managing federal awards, grants, or restricted funding, including compliance and reporting requirements.
  • Experience with ERP systems and leveraging technology to improve processes and reporting.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and operate effectively in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with a consistent track record of meeting deadlines.
  • Experience partnering cross-functionally to support decision-making and drive business outcomes.
  • Ability to translate financial data into clear, actionable insights for leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute department strategy in alignment with the organization's mission, goals, and long-term objectives.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage departmental staff, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee department budget compliance by monitoring expenses, allocating resources efficiently, and ensuring fiscal responsibility.
  • Set and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the department’s success and progress towards strategic goals.
  • Collaborate with leadership and cross-functional teams to drive initiatives, resolve challenges, and support organizational growth.
  • Support talent development by overseeing recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and staff performance management within the department.
  • Champion a culture of inclusion, diversity, and equity within the team, promoting positive employee engagement and team morale.
  • Lead the administration of federal awards and government contracts, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations, including A-133 audit requirements.
  • Oversee tracking, reporting, and documentation of grant activity, ensuring accuracy and alignment with funding requirements.
  • Maintain and refine cost allocation methodologies to support compliant and effective use of funds.
  • Partner with program leaders to ensure adherence to grant and contract requirements and provide guidance on financial compliance.
  • Provide regular updates to the CFO on the status of grant funding, including key changes, risks, or compliance considerations.
  • Review and approve grant-related financial schedules, including net assets, in support of the annual audit.
  • Support the annual budget and ongoing forecasting processes.
  • Manage annual external audit process and ensure timely, accurate deliverables.
  • Oversee preparation of schedules for annual 990 information returns.
  • Prepare annual financial activity reports for Feeding America and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure all accounting practices meet relevant GAAP standards and applicable federal, state, and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting.
  • Manage procedures and monitor adherence to internal controls of accounting functions; direct implementation of process improvements.
  • Provide accurate and timely financial and management reports to meet the needs of management, board of directors, and other entities.
  • Oversee preparation and review of monthly financial reports; analyze and communicate significant variances and trends in meetings.
  • Partner with departments to improve reporting clarity and usability.
  • Translate financial data into meaningful insights to support strategic decision-making and organizational performance.
