Vaccines and Pharmaceutical R&D are highly reliant on existing and emerging alliances in the development and commercialization of products, with partnered assets accounting for over 70% of the total R&D pipeline. There is a specific need to centrally manage the high value/risk/complexity globally-partnered programs and assets (including Public/Private Partnership/Consortia/Academic alliances that fit the criteria of high complexity/value/risk) for the organization. A specific area that has increased significantly over the past few years and requires Alliance Management support is Vaccines. The Alliance Director is responsible for enabling the execution of and delivering value of his/her alliance portfolio (3-5 alliances) by effectively matrix-managing and influencing key internal and external stakeholders associated with partnered projects, establishing clear objectives and accountability for alliances, providing leadership for the alliances by establishing trust and transparency, and proactively diagnosing problems, as well as developing solutions that maximize joint value by exploring the underlying interests of each party. Alliance Directors are also responsible for mitigating risks that are inherent to externalization efforts, across the high value/complexity/risk alliances. They accomplish this by proactively evaluating, documenting, communicating and managing the centrally managed alliance portfolio against internal policies and maintaining AM portfolio reports to document compliance.
