The Director, Discovery Process Chemistry is a pivotal role within our company, responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of projects from the preclinical pipeline of new products. This position requires a strategic leader who can direct a team of discovery process chemists, facilitating medicinal chemistry research by overcoming synthetic bottlenecks related to chemical intermediates and active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). The incumbent will play a crucial role in streamlining structure-activity relationship studies and ensuring the successful transition of compounds from discovery research into development. This involves close collaboration with discovery and preclinical research colleagues to maximize the speed of transition to clinical phases, adhering to preclinical workflows, and managing API supply during this critical period. In this role, the Director will report to the Executive Director of Discovery Project Chemistry, Process Research & Development within our company’s Research Laboratories organization. The position includes direct supervisory responsibility for approximately seven scientists who work within multidisciplinary teams comprised of both discovery and development scientists. The Director will be responsible for recruiting, appraising, and developing personnel under their supervision, including selecting, training, and recommending transfers, merit increases, promotions, and closures of personnel in accordance with company policy. Critical tasks for this role include oversight of new route design and synthetic methodology development, scale-up, and support of API campaigns for discovery and preclinical efforts. The Director will also be responsible for transferring appropriate technical information to support the preparation of API across internal sites and in collaboration with external partners. Proactive resource planning, risk assessment strategies, and budget management will be essential components of this position. Additionally, the Director will serve as a member of the core team for the discovery review committee, overseeing the discovery portfolio in a therapeutic area and influencing the approval of potential candidates for preclinical development. Establishing and maintaining external contacts for Process Research & Development, particularly within the Boston area, and interacting with the local academic community will also be expected.
