About The Position

This position is responsible for all aspects of branch assigned seasonal day camp programs. Duties include the recruitment, training and supervision of staff, development of programs and activities, coordination of branch and department events, community involvement, and program marketing. This position will also be responsible for maintaining program standards of excellence and accreditation standards (if applicable), for the day camp program. The position is responsible for program implementation and safety of participants for the YMCA Day Camp site and at off-site excursions and the direct supervision of camp staff and children. This position will maintain high quality sites and programs, follow all YMCA guidelines, practices, best practices and procedures, ensure all labor laws are enforced and followed, and create a program environment that meets the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs of every child in the program. Must have ability to relate to both children and adults and must have the ability to provide leadership and stability for participants and program continuity. This position must ensure that all administrative paperwork is completed within the specified timeframes and that the health, welfare and safety of the children and staff participants is a high priority.

Requirements

  • AGE: Twenty-five years or older
  • EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Units and coursework completed in education, child development, recreation, health, nutrition, natural science, zoology or a related field preferred, but not required.
  • RELATED EXPERIENCE: Experience working with children and staff in a day camp, resident camp, child care or after school program setting; 1-2 year’s supervisory experience.
  • At least 2 prior seasons of administrative experience in an organized resident camp or day camp program.
  • SPECIALIZED SKILLS: Strong character values, communication skills, emotional maturity
  • LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS: Current First Aid, Adult, Infant and Child CPR Certifications. Preventative Health Practices (PHP), Basic Water Rescue.
  • IMMUNIZATION AND PHYSICAL: Current TB (if program is located on a public school site), fully vaccinated for COVID-19.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, organizes and implements high quality day camp program at assigned location.
  • Ensures high quality programs through purposeful programming dedicated to building achievement and belonging in youth and relationships among youth and within families.
  • Full understanding of American Camp Association accreditation, if applicable, and responsible for ensuring assigned location operates in full compliance of accreditation and YMCA program standards at all times.
  • If program is located off site (school, church, etc.), develops positive relations with partner location as a YMCA representative.
  • Assist with marketing efforts and achieving enrollment goals.
  • Assist with budget development and secures necessary supplies and equipment for program activities within budget guidelines.
  • Supports supervisor with onboarding and training staff members as needed.
  • Assist supervisor with coordinating schedules and work flow to ensure program operates in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Observes, coaches and provided feedback to staff members at assigned location.
  • Provides feedback to supervisor regarding performance of staff members.
  • Ensures close visual supervision of children, following ratios based on specific program. No child is left unsupervised or staff alone with a child at any time.
  • Help children manage behavior using a positive approach, including proactive strategies, redirection and using constructive discipline with natural and logical consequences.
  • Actively supports the YMCA is committed to inclusion and compliance with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) where appropriate.
  • Support planning and implementing program curriculum and activities that are focused on skill development, developmentally appropriate, consistent with the YMCA values, and established guidelines.
  • Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards, maintains site and equipment, and maintains required program records in accordance with YMCA expectations.
  • Makes ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.
  • Communicates with supervisor regarding child’s development.
  • Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents.
  • Engages parents as volunteers and connects them to the YMCA.
  • Attends and participates in fundraising activities, family events, program activities, staff meetings and trainings as assigned.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
  • Follows reporting procedures and proactively responds to situations to ensure a safe environment for all involved.
  • Understands and complies with current federal, state, local regulations, and YMCA policies and procedures and accreditation program standards at all times.
  • Maintains positive relationship with parents, other YMCA team members and community partners.
  • Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings, as required.
  • Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management.
  • Demonstrate the YMCA Core Values of Caring, Respect, Honesty and Responsibility when working with members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff.
