About The Position

The Director, Data Science and Machine Learning sets strategic direction for data science and machine learning (ML) imperatives and will direct and design Data Science and Machine Learning algorithms scalable to the enterprise and initiates policies and procedures aimed at global adoption. This position partners with stakeholders in operational, customer and enterprise business units, and solution delivery groups to understand challenges, assess data needs, and develop strategies, roadmaps, and solutions to address complex logistical challenges. The role drives the advancement and adoption of advanced data science and ML techniques and algorithms aimed at advancing a pervasive data driven culture at UPS. This position directs the design and development of highly complex tools, methods, products, programs, and solutions to achieve the highest level of optimization and to attain optimal operational efficiencies. As the Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Data Science, Advanced Analytics, Machine Learning, and/or Computer Science, this position provides direction and leadership on strategic projects and initiatives to increase profitability and competitive advantage. This position uses demonstrated work experience and partnerships with industry experts, business, and technology stakeholders to drive out business and customer value using data and data science solutions. Preferred location: Atlanta, GA; highly qualified candidates in other locations will also be considered.

Requirements

7+ years of demonstrated experience leading a data science team from conception through the implementation of new data science models, tools, and techniques that lead to improvement in business performance
Extensive experience solving analytical issues through quantitative approaches and machine learning methods as well as vast experience using advanced statistical methods, data mining techniques, and information retrieval.
Working knowledge and proficiency in emerging computing and technological solutions; vast experience with distributed and big data technologies, programming and scripting languages that support analytical processes (e.g., Python, R, Java).
Hands-on experience in leading and managing enterprise advanced analytics projects in production at scale while using available cloud-AI technologies and infrastructures.
Ability to effectively advocate strategic direction around technical solutions to research scientists, engineering teams as well business audiences.
Experience mentoring data scientists in data aggregation, model experimentation, machine learning techniques, data visualization and production deployment architecture.
Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
Able to communicate data through a story framework to convey data-driven results to senior leadership and stakeholders with varying technical expertise.
Master’s or PhD Degree (or international equivalent) in a quantitative field of mathematics, computer science, physics, economics, engineering, statistics, operations research, quantitative social science, etc.) or additional experience above the minimum may be considered in lieu of the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

Develops and oversees the Data Science vision and adoption among data science departments across the organization and advocates a data-driven culture that rapidly drives business and customer value by leveraging Data Science and Machine Learning (ML) techniques.
Develops multi-year roadmaps and strategies to meet goals of maturity in data governance, Data Science, data literacy, and fluency to support the acceleration and delivery of advanced analytic solutions to meet business needs with focus on technology, automation, productivity, and quality of service.
Articulates business vision and strategy and mobilizes the workforce to collaboratively reach evolving business objectives through internal and external relationships.
Oversees others to conduct proof of concept (POC) projects as needed, vets techniques and potential business value models, and oversees development and implementation of data strategies and governance models to mine and manage large scale data sets to support Data Science/ML models and algorithms.
Identifies requirements to design cutting-edge Advanced Analytics/Machine Learning tools and/or solutions that are new to the industry to address short- and long-term challenges and business needs that aim to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
Oversees efforts to embed and adopt technology, automation, emerging data science technologies, frameworks, and methodologies globally.
Defines, advises, and influences use of emerging technologies by partnering with strategic vendor executives, communicates UPS needs and influences cutting-edge product development, and researches and promotes emerging technologies to educate staff and business management.
Champions technology and funding recommendations to senior management to ensure technology and value are maximized and meet business objectives.
Leads cross functional groups in a unified direction as well as an ability to influence and move top business leadership and senior executives while demonstrating an ability to form strong, meaningful, and effective connections with others internally and externally.
Communicates to business customers and senior leadership team with various levels of technical knowledge, educates them about our systems, and shares insights and recommendations that can inform business strategies.
