About The Position

The Director of Data Engineering is a strategic enterprise leader responsible for shaping and executing Mapfre USA’s data vision. This role leads high‑performing teams to ensure data is trusted, high‑quality, well‑governed, and operationally reliable—fueling Mapfre’s transformation into a truly data‑driven insurance organization.   As the key connection between business stakeholders and Data Engineering, the Director oversees the full data lifecycle and drives DataOps maturity. Partnering closely with Data Architecture, this leader delivers scalable, modern data solutions that support advanced analytics and AI initiatives. The role collaborates extensively across IT Architecture, Security, Infrastructure, Cloud, DevOps, Actuarial, Legal, Compliance, Risk, and the Head of AI to ensure the delivery of governed data and responsible AI operations aligned with enterprise strategy.   Through visionary leadership and operational excellence, the Director strengthens Mapfre’s enterprise data and AI foundation, accelerates modernization, and cultivates a culture of innovation. Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or professional level of knowledge in a specialized field, or equivalent related experience preferred.
  • 10+ years of leading and managing data teams.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years experience in Information Systems with three (3) years in a management capacity. A Bachelors degree in a technical discipline, preferably Computer Science, or equivalent experience is required.
  • Strong P&C insurance domain experience.
  • Strong expertise in data architecture, modeling, ingestion, orchestration, observability, and lifecycle management.
  • Understanding of insurance processes and regulatory expectations.
  • Knowledge of data privacy laws.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML lifecycle, MLOps practices and Responsible AI best practices.
  • Proficiency with AWS, Snowflake, and modern data tooling. Prior experience with SQL, Python. Proven project and solutions delivery management skills 
  • Proven experience defining and executing strategic roadmap for enterprise data solutions.
  • Ability to assess project risks and exposures; identify options and alternatives, make decisions, and implement improvements.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong ability to explain technical details to technical and non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Influences development of overall objectives including long-range goals for the organization.
  • Exercises judgment within broadly defined policies and practices. Establishes, modifies operating policies and procedures that affect subordinate units.
  • Recommends modifications to broad operating policies which may impact projects, operations, and considerable expenditure risk and major portions of operations.
  • Operates with a high degree of autonomy under broad strategic direction.
  • Insures that team assignments are aligned with enterprise-level goals and involve long-term strategic planning, enterprise-wide collaboration, innovation leadership, combining both strategic and tactical responsibilities.
  • Work is reviewed primarily in terms of achievement of strategic data and business outcomes, alignment with organizational vision, and impact across multiple functional areas.
  • Responsible for contributing to the vision and direction for Data initiatives in collaboration with senior leadership.
  • Lead teams of data engineers, managers and Data Product Managers.
  • Serves as a strategic leader with significant influence across business units, drives cultural and capability shifts across the enterprise, and plays a pivotal role in change management, innovation, and capability scaling.
  • Ensures alignment of data talent strategy with organizational needs, builds future leadership pipelines, and fosters a high-performance, psychologically safe, and inclusive team environment.
  • Develops and administers budgets, schedules, and performance requirements.
  • Accountable for solving complex, ambiguous, and enterprise-level problems requiring data-driven solutions.
  • Oversees the full lifecycle of data—from ideation to value realization—and ensures outcomes are measurable, governed, and aligned with enterprise objectives.
  • Operates at both strategic and tactical levels.
  • Strong negotiation, conflict resolution, and influencing skills.
  • Ability to coach, direct and develop individuals to achieve individual, departmental and company goals.
