About The Position

As a Data Engineering Director at Travelers, you’ll lead Business Insurance model implementation initiatives by bridging deep technical expertise with strategic vision. You’ll lead and grow a high-performing engineering team while maturing engineering practices that enable and scale our Auto pricing strategies. Your leadership will drive innovation in how we capture, process, and deliver data and model assets that empower our actuarial and data science partners. Beyond technical oversight, you’ll champion data quality standards, implement MLOps best practices, and cultivate strong cross-functional relationships across the organization. The ideal candidate combines strong data engineering expertise with the ability to translate complex business requirements into innovative solutions, while actively coaching, developing, and inspiring engineers to grow their skills and impact. Your contributions will strengthen our pricing strategies in a dynamic insurance marketplace.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or its equivalent in education and/or work experience.
  • 6 additional years of data engineering experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM related field or equivalent.
  • Five or more years of related experience.
  • Two or more years of management experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of data tools, techniques, and manipulation including cloud platforms, programming languages, and technology platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with Data Science and Actuarial Product teams to understand business requirements and translate them into robust, scalable data solutions supporting model development and Auto pricing strategies, while coaching the team on best practices and design tradeoffs
  • Lead the design and implementation of high-quality datasets that power analytical and modeling processes in support of Business Insurance Auto pricing strategies
  • Oversee data preparation activities including exploration, cleansing, and transformation. Ensuring high-quality inputs for pricing use cases, with a strong understanding of enterprise architecture, consumption patterns, platforms, and application infrastructure
  • Embed data management practices across the team to uphold data quality, governance, and stewardship standards, while mentoring engineers on strong data practices
  • Drive adoption of MLOps practices throughout the model development lifecycle, developing team capability in automation, monitoring, and model lifecycle management
  • Manage the operationalization and automation of data and model pipelines to ensure solutions are secure, supported, and scalable, while developing engineers’ operational ownership mindset
  • Serve as a data engineering leader within the BI analytics community, providing technical guidance, supporting pricing model delivery, and educating partners and users on strategic data sourcing and usage
  • Present analysis, architectural options, and recommendations to influence decisions and guide technical direction
  • Coach, mentor, and develop team members through regular feedback, career planning, and stretch opportunities, building a strong leadership and talent pipeline
  • Establish and evolve team processes, standards, and ways of working that promote quality, velocity, and continuous learning
  • Maintain strong relationships with partner teams to ensure needs are met, priorities are aligned, and impacted areas can plan and deliver work effectively
  • Perform other duties as assigned
