About The Position

Travelers is seeking a Director, Architecture to join our organization as we grow and transform our Enterprise Tech Solutions organization. Our Architects are responsible for designing and guiding the technology vision that enables business transformation, specializing in creating enterprise-wide solutions that bridge current capabilities with future possibilities. This strategic position requires expertise in cloud-native technologies, APIs, AI/ML, and emerging platforms to establish scalable architectures where business applications can evolve and thrive. The ideal candidate orchestrates the technical strategy that empowers development teams - defining target states, creating technology roadmaps, and establishing architectural frameworks that accelerate innovation while maintaining standards and governance. As the essential bridge between business strategy and technical implementation, this role directly impacts organizational agility, system integration, and the enterprise's ability to rapidly adapt and scale technology solutions across the business landscape. As a leader, you will provide visionary leadership that inspires architectural excellence while mentoring talent and fostering collaboration. You'll strategically align enterprise architecture capabilities with business objectives, effectively communicate complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders, and make architecture-driven decisions that optimize technology investments. Success requires balancing deep architectural expertise with business acumen while creating an environment where teams feel empowered to innovate and deliver architectural solutions that advance Travelers' digital transformation initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's in technology related field or equivalent, with 6 to 8 years of architecture experience.
  • Strong architecture and recent hands-on engineering experience with modern technologies.
  • Successfully architected large scale technology initiatives.
  • Hands-on expertise in Cloud using Serverless, Container and Managed services technologies.
  • Hands-expertise in Integration Architecture using APIs, Events, MCP, etc.
  • Experience in driving architecture transformation using Domain Driven Design (DDD), Microservices and Monolith migrations.
  • Strong leadership experience with a proven ability to influence executive and organizational decisions. The ideal candidate will have experience mentoring technology architects and engineers, as well as leading and managing technology teams to achieve strategic outcomes. They should demonstrate the ability to align team goals and actions with the organization's broader mission and strategy while effectively balancing long-term planning with day-to-day operational needs. Advanced leadership skills are essential, including the ability to provide constructive coaching and feedback, take initiative in situations without clear ownership, and inspire, motivate, and influence team members to drive results.
  • Extensive experience working an agile operational model.
  • Experience supporting transformational change. Able to adjust plans, priorities and strategies in response to changing circumstances.
  • Understanding of value creation and business capability models.
  • Experience identifying and analyzing current/future problems and opportunities, evaluating information to understand root causes, and exploring alternative solutions for effective decision-making.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve mutually responsible results.
  • Experience exercising sound judgment, making decisions and committing to a position.
  • Strong and effective verbal, written and listening communication skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, related STEM field, or its equivalent in work experience plus 6 years of programming/development experience.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading an architecture team within a specific segment or domain for a single business unit.
  • Drive a cohesive architecture strategy across Technology and Business domains in support of modernization and transformation initiatives in the value streams.
  • Collaborate and consensus build with Technology and Business leaders to create Target state and Transition state architecture.
  • Champion the successful execution of Enterprise initiatives within the business unit by anchoring technology enablement, roadmaps and architecture assurance.
  • Partner with Enterprise teams to solution for technology adoption challenges and ensure consistent architecture patterns and practices.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to Software Engineering excellence teams to drive improvements across SDLC practices in value streams.
  • Define target state technology architecture and roadmaps.
  • Ensure alignment of initiatives to target state, enterprise standards and business objectives.
  • Identify opportunities to capitalize on technology advances through analysis of key industry and technology trends to assess potential impact on the enterprise.
  • Define and lead technology proof of concepts to ensure feasibility of new technology architecture solutions.
  • Drive continuous technology modernization, including to minimize technical debt.
  • Collaborate with Technology and Business leadership to develop architecture priorities and direction to enable business imperatives.
  • Optimize talent strategy to ensure proper mix of resources. Proactively attract, develop, engage and retain high performing talent. Set clear goals, provide ongoing feedback and hold talent accountable. Promptly address performance issues.
  • Ensure proper alignment of team skills with technology direction and execution of proof of technologies.
  • Deliver communications to convey architectural direction.
  • Drive strategic relationships and champion buy-in.
