Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelors Degree in Healthcare Related Field
  • BLS certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • ACLS certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross with 3 months of hire date; if permitted through licensed scope of practice.
  • Current and valid Arizona RN license; if RN
  • De-escalation Techniques course within 3 months of hire
  • Basic EKG competency within 3 months of hire date; if licensed clinician
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical patient care experience in a relevant setting and minimum of 1-year clinical leadership experience in clinical patient care
  • Pediatrics: PALS certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross required within 3 months of hire date
  • Emergency Department: PALS certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross required within 3 months of hire date; if permitted through licensed scope of practice
  • TNCC within 1 year of hire date; if RN
  • Emergency Severity Index training required within 6 months of training; if RN
  • Surgical Services: PALS certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross within 30 days of hire date
  • Women’s Services: NRP certification required within 6 months of hire date

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading and directing unit staff involved in the provision of patient care within respective unit
  • Interviews and hires staff for the patient care unit; cultivating an atmosphere that promotes recruitment, retention and employee reward and recognition
  • Performs employee rounding to ensure adequate oversight and to promote employee satisfaction, serving as an effective coach in recognizing and supporting individual team member strengths and talents.
  • Manages staff performance through continuing education, effective delegation and ongoing coaching
  • Completes annual evaluation on all direct reports
  • Coaches employees for violations of policy; suspending or terminating in accordance with policy stipulations when necessary
  • Assumes 24-hour responsibility, authority and accountability for staffing, management, patient care, and service operation, serving as a role model for excellence in patient care
  • Is visible and accessible to staff daily. Is available to nursing unit staff after regular hours, responding to phone calls or text messages
  • Acts as backup to clinical nurses, administering nursing care to patients as needed; if within Director’s licensed scope of practice
  • Ensures employees are current with competencies, assessments, and annual training, as well as compliant with licensure and certification renewal requirements
  • Creates an environment in which team members hold each other accountable in provision of excellent patient care
  • Develops, justifies, and maintains a fiscal plan (budget) for the patient care unit. Monitors patient revenues and expenses, operating expenses, including salaries and capital expense items
  • Provides monthly justification of budget variances
  • Assists in preparing, monitoring, and adjusting annual budget and to assure cost-effective utilization of personnel, equipment, and supplies
  • Using productivity monitoring system, develops staff schedule in accordance with patient acuity, census, and budget, assuring daily staffing and acuity requirements are met
  • Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and nursing services to identify areas of opportunity and to ensure nursing practice continually improves and impacts positively on patient outcomes
  • Consistently works to meet patient satisfaction (HCAHPS) goals by promoting, monitoring and evaluating staff’s utilization of evidence-based behaviors and creates action plans when goals are not met
  • Assures compliance with organizational standards and outside regulatory bodies through regular chart reviews of nursing documentation and environmental rounds
  • Maintains evidence of quality measures tracking including unit dashboards
  • Conducts daily patient care rounds on the unit to identify and address patient care issues. Has knowledge of patients on the nursing unit and their clinical conditions. Communicates effectively with family members regarding care plan.
  • Investigates and follows up on concerns according to the hospital Grievance Policy
  • Organizes patient care and ensures continuity of care based on knowledge of clinical nursing needs of patients
  • Monitors and follows up on Occurrence Reports
  • Maintains evidence of quality measures tracking including unit dashboards and Gemba boards
